My position in Hoboken was eliminated 12/31/2018. Severance package is for a year. Does anyone know if I can claim unemployment benefits during or after the severance period? I filed a claim, got a notice of benefit determination with a weekly dollar amount but when I tried to claim a payment for the first time, I got a message "your claim is not payable at this time." No reason given and not able to speak to a person on the NJ rabbit hole phone number. Has anyone else run into this? Is it because the severance is paid out over the year rather than in a lump sum? Thanks for any help that you can provide.

One year severance? That is incredible, not only are you out of this dumpster fire but have a whole year to find something so much better.
You cannot claim unemployment while receiving severance. Once your severance period is over, if you’re unable to find another position, then you can try to claim it.
I think it depends on whether your severance is time based- rather than a bulk sum. In other words payed over time.
The gray area is when its a bulk sum for a particular set of weeks. In other words, “here is 10k, which is equal to 5 weeks”
In general, if lump sum, them ok to go for unemployment
Now its sort of moot because the number of weeks you can be on unemployment is limited, and all this does is push the start back anyway
Plus, get ready to see how little you get anyway!
I think the law may vary by state. I think you have to wait till after the severance period is over. You can't claim unemployment if you are still on a company payroll. You should go to unemployment website and see if they have FAQs or go to an office and ask the question if you can't reach them by phone.
