Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Anthem - Reduction In Force

Occurring today. Company wide. No corporate communication emails. So difficult to tell how deep the cuts are. Every area was apparently asked to cut.

A 1/31/19 victim here. No warning and done prior to bonus distribution team avoid paying me. Turned out to be the best thing that could’ve happened to me. Stay positive and prepared. There’s opportunities that are better with orgs who actually know what they’re doing.

I had worked for Anthem for about a year, received and email regarding organization changes and then was told on the call that those of us on the call were being let go and to check email for paperwork. There was no communication from the manager, this was totally out of the blue, had no idea what was going on, this was over 4 years ago. And it continues….not sure when again...

Want to thank all who posted to this thread, especially to the person starting it. So very sad. I'm in Norfolk, still waiting it out. Time is short, I know. So many are still unaware.

ANTHEM has removed or eliminated all organizational announcements on all the RIFs, reorganizations and changes. They are doing this on purpose and do NOT want the information in any hard copy or email that can be shared with the news media.

The RIFs are structured with getting an Outlook message with phone number and passcode to dial in. The message will say something in the subject line like : UPDATE, REORG UPDATE or similar, but as the word is out I am sure they have many more planned.

These heartless b--tards get on the call and give you some speal about maybe or not meeting recently, and then you hear the other dial-in come on, who is someone from HR. Then the HR person emails you a prepared pdf file for your RIF situation and package. They tell you to ask some questions and can email more later to the HR rep.

So does not matter what you say, they have had this RIF prepared for some time. They just want to get you done. You get 30 days notice, plus a package of supplemental unemployment of up to 26 weeks max (capped a few years ago no matter how many years you have served at the company). You have to apply for unemployment and they coordinate with you States UE and having to interview and apply for jobs and Anthem makes up the difference up to you current salary for your number of weeks. If you get a job before the period of time, you will only get 50% of remaining weeks minus any UE. So there is no severance package or lump sum. You only get UE every 2 weeks, and Anthem portion still direct deposit into you bank of supplemental.

What a place. This is how it all ends.

Your benefits for Medical, Dental, and Vision go until end of the month your supplemental ends, and deduct premium from pay.

You will get paid for your PTO days, but not sick or former supplemental short term disability days.

Hard to believe it has come down to this.

I had 34 years with the company. They dont care, and just want to replace you with 3 or more cheaper labor at Legato (Anthem company in India to replace contractors and associates), who the can pay a fraction of your salary and benefits. I'm sure the Legato team like the jobs and the minimal benefits packages, which might seem good for them.

They will keep doing this till all contractors and associates have been replaced. So BEWARE just because they did not get you in the earlier ways your time is coming to, and more if not all will be RIF'd.

Best to all other RIFs and future ones who are not even aware yet. Wake up though and get prepared.

Was impacted by 1/31 RIF. Only one in my dept but heard rumors of 500+ impacted. Been with company 4.5 yrs. Dept head still hasn't reached out. Is this business as usual or a culture shift at Anthem? Could be turning into UHC: long hours, poor work/life balance, golden handcuffs.

They pay out as "supplemental unemployment benefits" so that they get a tax credit for what they pay. This requires the person that has been given rif papers to go to the state and apply for unemployment benefits. Whatever the max allowed to be paid by the state is paid, reducing the actual out of pocket from the company who gave the rif. It reduces the money available for unemployment if it is needed after the payout ends. Rif payouts were only good for 26 weeks. Also, there is oppurtunity to lose bonus. Don't sign rif until you have read the fine print and make sure you get what you worked for.

Expect many more layoffs beyond April, if anything it will calm down for a bit until AI has gathered more info. Layoffs now are just to cut some fat (not limited to any certain departments) the next round will be to fully implement Gail’s new direction. The reduced or eliminated org announcements on changes/re orgs are on purpose and have a reason.

there will be more. one of our folks got handed her walking papers after 30 years. s/he felt fortunate to get six months severance; i didn't have the heart to tell him/her that since the policy is two weeks per month of employment, anthem made a LOT money on the deal.

expect more. they aren't done. march and april will be another bloodletting.

the worst part is they're doing all this silently, swearing management to secrecy, in order to protect the stock value.

I guess all those billions they were touting during last week's town hall meeting wasn't enough to pay the people who made all that money happen. Anthem is heading in the wrong direction.

Many clinical positions eliminated 1/31/19. The irony of getting the call the day after the CEO message is particularly bizarre. Anticipate more as well. Dead wood still there.

Corp wide. Looking to save $$ with outsourcing. AIP funded to 75% but many StaffVP and Dir. being told to not distribute all of it to boost cash reserves. Transformation has been a disaster and cost the Corp Millions in bad ideas

No warning. Day after positive earnings call. Seems like it is all about lining pockets of upper leaders.

Not sure if it's accurate, but I've heard layoffs will be ongoing until April.

Many managers who were unaware of the first round are trying to reassure that layoffs are over. How can they know when they weren’t advised of this round. This is irresponsible and not building trust in leadership.

At least 5% of the company was laid off but can't confirm for sure since Gail, the current CEO doesn't want announcments to go out like in the past. No transparency.

Anyone care to comment on what departments were impacted?

There's been no official announcements in our area, but people we support were let go.

Really sad.

We had layoffs today for director level down to senior associate. 4 people in our department. Across the country, no one state. No corporate announcement. Just sudden and seemingly random. Not transparent at all.

I was given RIF paperwork today. Employed over 2 years. Have pending interview next week and am hoping for an offer because I believe in the company. But it’s a corporate environment and can change on a dime. At least the company cares enough not to make you leave empty handed.
