Thread regarding Sears layoffs

It's telling how much of our inventory is discontinued

Was going through an aisle and literally 95% of it came up as discontinued. The Go Forward Plan is Go Extinct?

Yes, there is still a pharmacy at my store. However; the pharmacy recently had hours cut back to 10-7 M-F, 11-6 Saturday, and closed Sunday... this down from 9-8, 10-7, and 11-5.

We have lost a few customers because of the Sunday closure, especially since we have 2 grocery stores and 3 standalone pharmacies within 1 mile drive of the store.

At Kmart at least, we’ve been told by our district manager (Joe) that automotive is going away completely (including oil, washer fluid, and other ‘basics’), we will no longer sell mattresses or appliances, electronics, and DVDs will also be going away.

Sporting goods will condense to emphasize camping and bikes. The athletic section will going away (treadmills, sport balls, baseball equipment, etc). Hunting/fishing stuff will be reduced/eliminated based on store performance and market.

Home Improvement will be Whittled down to ‘everyday basics’ only and it looks like we’re losing a majority of the craftsman power tools, automotive tools, locks, hook and rail, and smoke dector section.

Garden shop is going away for the most part and we’ve been told that we’re no longer selling bagged mulch or the larger bags of soil. What was in the separate garden shop area (fertiziler, potting soil, insect control, and fencing) has been moved into the main store and placed in the condensed DIY sections.

Pantry and HBA will be going to an ‘everyday essentials’ model and whatever is left of the National brands in most categories will be replaced with generic, if not already. National brands will only be in high-demand sections, such as feminine hygenie, shampoo, dental care, and deordant. The chemical side of pantry will largely be untouched.

The new focus of the “transformation” will be homewares, toys, and softlines.

We have discussed with Andresen that toy department will ‘shift’ by removing two counters that abut softlines and moving them to the former electronics department. The newly created space will be used for additional softlines racks. Once mattress and what’s left of electronics sells down, additional counters will be used to expand the toy department.

If it’s a Sears there are major changes being done at the moment at our store. Major changes meaning complete layout changes of entire areas.

This is probably the root cause of about 75-80% of it. I can recall it happening with a fair amount of stuff in 9 and 34 the last 2-3 years for stuff that we’re still getting new, current date coded product today. Either that or the product is being rationed due to “vendor constraints” (the vendor is waiting on cash before shipping) and is technically discontinued for OP’s store, but not the company as a whole. It’s fun looking at the MFB and comparing the list of items that are N/A due to vendor constraints and then looking at the PrimeClerk docs for vedors trying to force SHC to accept or reject POs.

Though probably true in most cases, sometimes the item isn't really being discontinued. The inventory teams (at HE) game the system to get off of reports showing how bad their instock is by temporarily changing the status of some items. I think it is a dishonest scam and bad ethics.
