Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Severance is not a guarantee

Remember this, people. Severance is not something dictated by law. It's literally on the company to decide if it does or doesn't want to give a package to laid off employees.

Don't wait for something that might not be coming just to find yourself in an over-saturated job market with no safety net to help you out.

Time to leave Seagate is now.

That's odd. I just take all the vacation i want. Using the old plan that was in place when I was hired, I'd be at 3.5 weeks by now. So that is what i take.

Sounds like some of you might need to grow a pair.

Unlimited? Haha. I’m “allowed” less vacation then ever my life now. If it’s up to your manager you might get almost zero vacation and get treated like c-ap for even asking

that unlimited vacation is c-ap anyway. now my manager acts like he's doing me a favor by allowing time off, instead of me taking what I'm owed

Seagate already lost an age discrimination suit years ago. So I guess there is wishful thinking.

In the US severance can be changed, like any company policy, at any time. Just like Seagate capping our vacation accrual at 4 weeks (before changing it to unlimited) or IBM capping severence at 1 month in 2016.

Age discrimination suits are just wishful thinking. The only people that are guaranteed to received it are those that already have.

Sorry, i don't know what you guys do or where you are located, but severance in the states is usually similar to the VEEP in terms of notice pay (several weeks paid to sit at home and party) and time in service pay (2 weeks pay per year employed). There is no bonus, but getting unemployment pay exceeds the bonus anyway, so no loss there either.

I'm just glad america is great again.

If you own a company and it reach a stage shedding manpower is inevitable, ideally will you prefer to pay severance or not pay severance?

Obvious it seem. An typical approach will be play out the layoff in phases and lowest severance possible. Impact of uproar, if any, is minimum.

Severance is sort of a license to shed older workers without retribution. While there is nothing to stop Seagate from reducing their severance, it invites lawsuits from workers pushed out with nothing to lose. The company got burned already in an age discrimination lawsuit after a layoff in the mid 2000's and I don't think they want to go there again.

Just imagine the company paying a very small serverance pay or none at all.By the next round of redundancies people will be aware how they will be f##ked over by seagate. These people will cause a lot of damage as a way of retribution for being f##ked over. Its not in Seagates interest to pay people a poor severance payment.

Yea that sounds like something Seagate management would say just so they would have to pay less people severance pay.

The company must follow its documented policy so keep an eye on any changes. If people get screwed there will be a second wave of voluntary departures that will be larger that people expect. If they want the company destroyed that would be a great strategy.
