Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

Depressing news, but....

....at least summer will be just a couple months away once they end half day Fridays. Then we’ll be back to half day Fridays again!

That’s not so bad. Right? Come on guys, cheer up.

Say what? It’s the nine straight months after summer you dread. Oh yeah, you’re right. My bad ☹️

It doesn’t matter how many hands are working or how many hours you put in. If you’re going in the wrong direction with the wrong product wrong processes too many layers too top heavy etc. just prolonging the inevitable demise. Hollow promises of movies tv shows and whatever are only temporary salves to fool whatever investors are still on the fence or have abandoned you completely. In the end Ynot is fleecing the company at the expense of everyone like all the other CEOs. If he really meant it he would not take a salary until the company turns around. Nope instead it’s death by a thousand cuts. Someone said Christmas time off is next. Of course it is. The excuse? Studios are open all the way until Christmas. What a crock. Next will be your 401k. There is no damn plan. Any long term plan is unsustainable unless you fix today and the short term. You know what your execs are good at? Over thinking and second guessing. Never ever at decision making. None of them have crystal balls. They are grasping at straws. If you have any shred of talent or self respect get out while there are still options.

The tine off is exceedingly generous. Performance and outlook is very challenging so it’s all hands on deck. Necessary.

I’d feel bad for you if I had time to stop laughing at your gross entitled attitudes.

Blame the millennials because they can’t do an honest days work in a 4.5hour work week?! HA says the grandpa who functions like its 1980. Millennials don’t NEED 4.5 days to do what takes you 4.5 weeks - retire pops, y’all oldies are the reason we’re here trying to clean up your “same old same old / heaven forbid we change and evolv debris.

To sum up the numbskull libertarians here: "In China there's nets on buildings....Americans are such slackers comparatively!!! Be happy you have a job!! I used to walk to school up hill both ways! Change scares me! Blaaaah."

Grow up. This race to the bottom isn't a badge of honor. Realize the best performing companies recruit the best talent while respecting their work/life balance, not this fake unlimited c-ap.

Honestly cannot believe the whining on this site. A bit of history here: half day Fridays were implemented decades ago as a summer benefit only. Then, because the company was doing well, they were extended until the holiday shut down. No, whiners, most companies do NOT shut down between Christmas and New Years. That is pretty unique to the toy industry and ad agencies and Mattel employees are lucky to enjoy that benefit. Anyway, because the company was doing so well, half day Fridays were ultimately extended year-round. So while everyone worked hard, they also got to play hard...enjoying good compensation, half day Fridays all year round, and generous time off during the holidays. Fast forward many years: Mattel, once the world's largest and most profitable toy company is CIRCLING THE DRAIN!!! Yes, I understand that (some of) the remaining employees work hard. But there is NO REASON that management should authorize so much time off. I understand that the pullback of this benefit is "inconvenient." Employees will always complain when a benefit is taken away. But as a shareholder, I'm thrilled to hear this. Mattel's stock decline has impacted shareholders in a huge way. There is no reason that employees should be complaining because they have to work 5 days a week like the rest of the population. Bunch of entitled overpaid people who have been too lazy to find a new job and are complaining about the sinking ship. Turn the ship around and maybe the half days will return.

if you cut down the outlook meetings by 50% you’ll probably get back those hours and make for those up half day Fridays

It’s mostly CYA’s anyway.

peoples, it's summer in Australia right now. Why all the anxiety..... Exercise the WFH and unltd. vacation policies.

It's what they implemented, so you should be using it.

“Why all the angst? You will soon forget the memories of half day Fridays when you can have the whole day off to sip margaritas under the unlimited Vaca policy.”

Yeah, sure, to whoever wrote the above comment. We’ll see how that flies! In a company that’s barely keeping it’s head above water, and with future layoffs no doubt in the works as we comment here.

Once those MIA employees are shown the door then watch your workload increase exponentially.

More like you’ll be knocking back the tequila at home to decompress from your newly extended, labor intensive work weeks.

Blame the millennial slackers and their pathetic work ethic. They can't do one honest day's work in a 4-1/2 day work week.

To do something so enormously unpopular at a time when we continue to lose talent is mind blowing. The message is clear: don’t let the door hit you on your way out.

I read the news with some amusement.

The new full day Friday policy is entirely negated by the unlimited vacation policy.

Why all the angst? You will soon forget the memories of half day Fridays when you can have the whole day off to sip margaritas under the unlimited Vaca policy.

Dear grand miscalculation, I think your post was well written. I certainly was one who enjoyed and took advantage of the Friday afternoons whenever possible. As with many employees who gave a damn about their work, I worked tirelessly when needed, evenings, weekends, into work before dawn...

Just truly dissappointing. What do we look forward to next? I suppose another round of layoffs, maybe? Or maybe new news about how the company is on the upswing, then find out a week later, it ain't so true...

Oh , Ynot, I want to think you're good for this company, but you keep doing things to remind me how out of touch you are with this company.

Management doesn't even have the respect for it's workers or intelligence to outline the new working hours in detail. They left middle manegment to field questions that they didn't have answers for.

Shows a complete lack of compitence from leadership.

This feels like a grand miscalculation by CEO & CPO that will have repercussions far beyond anything they imagine. Mattel employees are not "lazy" even though that is your obvious view. They took the freedom this policy afforded them, and gave it back to the company several times over. How do I know this? Because this policy has existed in both good times and bad. It was not limiter to Mattel when Monster High was a $Billion dollar brand, or when they had the Disney Princess license. It was not 1/2 day Friday, laziness, or a lack of commitment that ruined both those things, it was corporate hubris. As the new leaders of the company, you managed to DESTROY the loyalty and commitment of 1000's of honest, hard working people with a single email.

If that was your plan, nice work. You succeeded.

I've been witnessing terrible financial decisions being made regularly. I just leave hoping the executives know something i don't, because based on what i have seen this company does not have a chance. Terrible decisions, questionable reasoning, logic has been thrown out the window. Most decisions seem like acts of desperation. Maybe this is just another one of those desperate decisions that has been made without thinking it through. This will be the final straw for some people. I am sure they must realize that, maybe they are just trying to get rid of the employees who have not bought in?

When the company pulls a stunt like this you know it's in a death spiral. There is no financial incentive to take away this benefit as you cannot put it on the books as a savings.

People are going to do even less work as a result and flat out don't care anymore.

Bad news for the company.

So true about what someone wrote in regards to our location here. When I worked for Hasbro the home prices in the area were great. You can still easily get a 2,000 sq ft plus home there for under 300K and within walking distance to work.

Not to mention that they still get half day Fridays without the belief that taking that away will make the company prosper and be more competitive.
