Thread regarding DXC Technology layoffs

Got caught looking at job openings by my manager

He didn't say anything, but to say I'm panicking right now would be an understatement. It's not that I'm not ready to leave DXC, I am, but I still don't have anything better lined up and being fired instead of laid off would really put me in a pickle.

Any suggestions on what I should do? Should I approach him about it? He's not the friendliest guy, but he is also not the worst manager I ever had...

Getting caught looking for a job , while working can be simplified in this way ..... how would you feel if you caught your spouse looking at a dating web site ?

If you don’t want to be there , at least have the courtesy to just leave.

I get the difference that employers are not emotionally attached to you . But you and they are both financially attached . You both have employment agreements to stand by .

If you must Look for work during the day . Do it at lunch on your own device . Do it for 1 hour a night when you get home . Develop a respectful way of managing this endeavour .

Be professional - even if DXC can’t be . Maintain your integrity .

By all means , leave DXC when you land that position . But know that DXC does not pay you to look for work elsewhere.

Good luck finding the career path you desire .

I am actually amazed at the number of people at DXC who are not looking at job openings. I had frequent discussions with my manager and my employees both about looking for other opportunities and what the future of DXC is. We worked long hours servicing the customer, but all of us were checking on other opportunities knowing that our hard work would go unrewarded and unappreciated with the likelihood of a "thank you, good-bye" at the end of our assignment. Most of us are working elsewhere now.

I probably shouldn't mention that I just had my annual review at the new company and got both a raise and a bonus. Happy to be out!

You are showing excellent initiative and imagination by looking for ways to leave DXC. Your manager should give you a really good appraisal and a huge pay rise to make sure you stay.

You dont say where you are from. If UK / Europe I wouldnt give a toss. In India then I understand the managers can be a lot more shall we say non-understanding.... I would just keep my head down and look out of hours or away from office....

The problem here is not that you are looking at job openings. I would guess 75% of the people working at DXC is doing this. The problem is that you were looking at job openings during work hours.

And this is something that can get you fired, as you need to do that during your private time, and not during the time your are getting paid by another employer

Before I left, my boss was fed up too and confided in me that senior VP’s had expressed dispair in the direction the company was heading; they were fed up too! So if the senior leadership are fed up I wouldn’t worry about some low level manager, I’d focus a lot more effort on being proactive and getting your CV and clear career direction in front of an agent before DXC ruins it:

You can get complacent thinking it won’t happen to you. It will and has done to a third of the staff.

Look now whilst you have the safety net, but don’t sit back and waste time worrying about DXC Managers who are only out to cover their own back.

Everybody is looking, and if they aren't, they should be. I wouldn't worry too much.

I would absolutely not care, in fact ANY good manager will tell you, employees come first.

He is probably... no wait definitely doing the same thing. Hey I’ll just throw this out there, UKIIMEA VP Karen McLaughlin has got a new job, she posted it on LinkedIn... goes against everything they preach, if you believe so strongly why leave for better pastures? needless to say F--- DXC.

Health and safety laws state you are allowed either 6 or 9 mins per hour personal time. Look it up if you don’t believe me.

Lastly, your scared, if your boss has any meaningful deliverables... he will be scared more. If you go he won’t get backfill. And he will still be expected to deliver the same regardless.

Don’t worry. Your leader is probably doing the same. Everyone is.

I wouldn’t even think about this again. Don’t give him any power or satisfaction. If he mentions it just say you were looking for a friend. How much overtime do we work with no compensation. F--- DXC.

To the person who said "understood people who did this at the workplace" the company expects you to work long hours , weekends and Holidays an d without any pay increases or bonus for 5+ years, so at least they can give you some slack when you do personal stuff "on company time".

EVERYONE Should always be looking for a new job with DXC or any company. Doesn't mean you have to leave at the 1st thing that comes your way, but if something fits and it's more money or less hours then JUMP.

It's also good to go on interviews once a while, because practice makes perfect

I would wait until you see him on a sports website and casually ask: "how are they doing?" or a games site and asking "Anything worth buying?" to let him know it's 1-1.

DXC managers know their staff look for jobs (after all, it's DXC, who wouldn't, right?). But the concern would be if you were using work productive time for personal web-browsing. If it were lunchtime, then fine. But given you appear shaken by it, then I am guessing it was productive time.

But who is to say you are not having a late lunch?

I would advise not to approach him. If he's unfriendly, then all you will do is boost his ego of power over you and worse confirm in his own mind you WERE doing something wrong. Whereas there is an element of doubt at the moment.

Just make sure he doesn't catch you again, as that becomes a reportable trend that can be used in his reports, appraisals or whatever "I noticed on at least two occassions..."

I would say, use the evenings to "look around"; ring agencies during lunchtime and then sack your boss by leaving.

Approach him and say what ? "I am using work resources (network, computer, etc.), and expect the company to pay me for taking care of personal activities on company time and using company resources." Why would you be doing this in the first place, sorry but I never understood people who did this at the workplace ??
