Thread regarding Windstream Corp. layoffs

Finding another job equal to what I have will be near impossible

You guys on here act like it’s so easy for people to walk away. I know several people with 20+ years and walking away from that is not easy. Especially if you live in an area where finding an equal paying job would be difficult. Windstream is a big employer in my area and I already commute 45mins to get there. Finding another job equal to what I have will be near impossible. No one should be surprised things are going down the tube but some people will have to “go down with the ship” because they can’t afford to give up their salary until their forced.

Think that @XGW3EPD-stp hit the nail on the head with this post. If it was that easy to find an equally paying job, no one would be scared. But it’s not. I would advise all of you that are talking about abandoning ship and how the writing was on the wall for a long time to read this post.

I agree with the op. I’m starting to come to the realization that having a job with less money is better than no job reminiscing about WS. Work your way up.

You've been put on notice for at least a two years things were going down the tubes. You tried to ride it out. Now you are on official notice that there is nothing good going to happen here. Here is what you do have now -- a little bit of time. Use that time to start looking what the next chapter of your life will be like. Time to get up and get your resume updated and polished. Time to quit believing you make so much money and WXN pays great. They don't. If you are making a ton of cash -- its because you work tons and tons of OT for it. You can make great money elsewhere. If you are under 60, you can pivot and find a new career. For now, start socking away that money each pay check. Stop eating out. Prepare. You CAN do other things besides being stuck at this company. Find your opportunity before you are forced to. And you will be forced to ...-- and likely without any severance. Sad the way TT has treated employees and yet he will be more than fine.

I’m the original OP - Maybe entering the job market seems scarier then it really is. I’m lucky because although I have almost 15 years with Win I’m in my 30s and will recover if I loose my job. On that same note I started in the call center and moved up throughout the company. Windstreams systems and ways of doing things don’t exactly prepare you for other things. My point in the original post was people almost blaming those that didn’t abandon ship. Some people can’t take the risk.

I know someone said there are a lot of work from home jobs. I’m sure there are, but I’m at a disadvantage with no degree and 100% of my adult employment with WIN. My bad for not thinking ahead in my 20s and working to get a degree on WINs dime.

"For people who are in their late 40's to their 60's it's a lot more difficult"

You keep your skills current by taking training classes and it isn't that difficult, even for older folks. These days companies will overlook someone's age if they have the current skills and correct attitude.

it's not worth it for your mental health, waking up everyday in a bad mood.

you'll see, once you're free of these id--ts you will look back and laugh.

also take your sick days now, if anything happens you won't get paid for them.

I though the same thing, but keep in mind that most of the folks at Windstream haven't had a raise in years, thier pay has not kept up with the market. I never thought I could get a higher paying job and when I left my new employer didn't bat an eye at the 20 percent more in a salary I was asking, it made me wish for more. To what others are pointing out, it's a work from home position as well. It may seem stressful now but once you get a handle on the true market out there you will see. It's not all doom and gloom.

Agree with OP. It's not as easy as "just leave". For a millennial in their 20's or someone in their 30's jumping ship is just what they do. For people who are in their late 40's to their 60's it's a lot more difficult because companies want younger minds with fresh ideas over what they consider to be dinosaur experience from people "set in their ways". So for those of you who are laughing with glee over the down fall of WS, remember that people's lives and the lives of their families are affected in ways that maybe yours aren't.

What skills do you have? There is LOTS of remote work out there right now.
