Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Financially, it just makes more sense, even if it's cruel

The issue with older folks is that they cost the company more with insurance, and they tend to have more health related issues which requires time off, costs the company more, etc.

By getting younger folks onboard, they get paid less, don't want insurance, and tend to leave very quickly.

Financially, it just makes more sense, even if it's cruel.

I'm in my late forties, and i can start to feel pieces of me breaking down.

I was saved from the mass layoffs last year, but i steer clear of hospitals if i can.

I agree with @XGSXzni-1mtv that this is the reality that we live in even if this is cruel, but I also think that people should stand up to this to a bigger extent. People are facing the same issues at other companies. I don’t buy the “it makes more financial sense” story. If we follow that logic, the most financial sense for the company is for us to work for free as slaves or whatever and last time I checked that was outlawed. This should be outlawed too.

I made that original "cruel" post this one refers to, and personally, i think older workers are more reliable and more loyal.

This "bring 'em in, and get 'em out" mentality (everywhere, not just B&N), is another ugly side of Capitalism.

And losing the older workers, you deprive the customer of a certain perspective & knowledge.

The other side is that older folks tend to be a bit slower & more conversational, as opposed to the "book in the hand and move on" concept we see today.

Health care statistics show that younger workers make more insurers claims than older workers -55 plus.

In addition health care costs for a company is based on volume, not age of participants.

Older workers age not wanted and eliminated because of higher salaries , perceived inflexibility and equally the image they represent to the company.

What goes around comes around..

That is it folks!

Everyone should be watching their back at this company. They were really sneaky in the past and it's even worse now. Keep a journal, I do.
