I know it's not just our store but it seems like age discrimination. Managers would make their lives miserable so they would quit or they would find ways to fire them. My friend is now working at one store which got rid of all of the older women.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It's DISCRIMINATION is what it is!
The issue with older folks is that they cost the company more with insurance, and they tend to have more health related issues which requires time off, costs the company more, etc.
By getting younger folks onboard, they get paid less, don't want insurance, and tend to leave very quickly.
Financially, it just makes more sense, even if it's cruel.
I'm in my late forties, and i can start to feel pieces of me breaking down.
I was saved from the mass layoffs last year, but i steer clear of hospitals if i can.
The listing of ages is required in a lay-off, however it does not stop anyone from suing the company.
They just hope people are stupid enough not to know their rights .
Side Note: During that mass layoff everyone's age was listed next to their position in order to protect BN from lawsuits. What a thoughtful way of getting rid of the older workers while sacrificing others that were costing them too much!
