Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Maybe the same poster will stop posting

It’s obvious from the posting here the vast majority of the comments here are from one person....check writing style. Can you please stop?, you’re ruining the forum and making it look like your column.

I’m definitely not sticking up for IBM, but get a life, this is for layoff postings not your personal dear IBM

Watson being cut

As an early adopter of Watson Workspace*, we want to share with you some important upcoming changes.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 15 Jan 2019, IBM will formally announce the End of Marketing for all Watson Workspace offerings and we anticipate ending the Watson Workspace service on 2/28/19. This includes Watson Workspace Essentials, Plus, and the free offering. It is our intent to ensure that you have a clear understanding of your options regarding the closure of Watson Workspace.

While there is no question that Watson Workspace is innovative and agile, it hasn’t resonated with clients or obtained the traction in the marketplace necessary for IBM to continue forward with the service. Despite our best efforts and enthusiasm for these offerings, our decision to withdraw them aligns to IBM’s investment strategy, focused on delivering solutions that deliver measurable value to our customers and business partners.

IBM has stopped accepting new orders for Watson Workspace products, and we will not be adding any new features to the offerings. We have been working with our licensed customers and business partners to provide options for handling subscriptions and contracts once the end of service announcement is published to provide a smooth transition.

Starting tomorrow there will be a banner placed into the UI of Watson Workspace informing users of the timeline for moving off the service. Mobile customers may find details in the release notes of the mobile app. We will also provide access to a tool that will allow you to download and save your conversations and content from Watson Workspace. Please plan accordingly to capture any content you'd like to retain as we work to sunset the service. This option will only be available for a limited time.

Thank you for your support of Watson Workspace and IBM Collaboration Solutions. Please find additional details and answers to commonly asked questions in the FAQ that will be posted in the Watson Workspace banner tomorrow.

You mean the guy who doesn’t understand that Bain was there to cost cut Services and not to buy the business? Would be happy if we could mute him. I’m here for real news.

IMHO: News about IBM is important if you want to stay gainfully employed.

One of the big differences with IBM 40 years ago versus now: Employees knew "why" IBM made decisions. There was surprising alignment when people really understood the company they worked for. Not surprising either. We all got a minimum of 6 weeks training starting on day 1.

Well-informed employees make better independent decisions and help move the company forward.

IBM is much less transparent than it used to be. Many VPs can't manage their way out of a bowl of jello. Postings about IBM help everyone understand the new normal. More please.

If we're listing things we could do without, I really don't need to read "If you don't like IBM, leave!" one more time. And don't tell us that if we can't go elsewhere it's because we lack "skills". IBM isn't paying me $200K for my good looks and charm, I promise. That advice is about as useful as "If you want to be rich, have more money!", and it has a whiff of blaming the victims about it.

I guess that the people posting that are young, (probably under 30), without commitments like family or a mortgage or half an eye on whether they've saved enough for retirement because that seems like an eternity away. And I understand: I had worked for five different companies, two of them startups, in three countries, by the time I was 32, and had a net worth of zero.

But when you hit your mid-50s, the options are very different. In the IT industry, nobody else wants you any more than IBM does; it's just that most companies are less obvious about it (and have less of a historical hangover) than IBM.

And you can't just give your landlord 30 day's notice and relocate to another city. You probably have children in school, or elderly parents that you take care of. You have a house to sell, another to buy, and belongings to move. Moving is one of the most stressful life events you can go through, up there with divorce and bereavement. (And if your idea of a move is to have a couple of buddies help you pack everything in cardboard boxes and stick it in the back of a U-haul, you have no idea). There's a reason people accuse IBM of using "colocation" to drive older workers out.

So yeah, stop telling us to "get a job". For many of us, the realistic scenario is to cling on and fight to improve IBM, in whatever way we can, from the inside.

One can always change the station if they don't like what's on.

I like hearing the news good or bad. Keep em coming.

Let people comment. If one person is being very prolific in commenting, that is fine. I hope you are not one of the IBM corporate trolls monitoring and trying to discredit people commenting on this site. I know this bothers the dishonest company monitors.

Amen. Same with the repeated posts about Bain buying and selling parts of IBM. IBM hired Bain & Company (the management consulting firm) to make recommendations around cost-cutting and reengineering, NOT Bain Capital (the PE firm) to buy parts of IBM. Now, Bain & Co may very well be advising IBM to sell off certain businesses or assets (I would be if I were them) but the way this poster keeps talking about what Bain is going to do when they buy GBS and similar is just absurd.

I believe this is the same poster who keeps mentioning "DASD" when talking about the various hardware businesses (storage in this case) that supposedly are going to be sold. The last time I heard that term was in 1998 and the person using it was in their 60's at the time. Goodness.

Why it bothers you so much? News about IBM are layoff related issues, that’s why people here comment those threads. Afraid of people discussing the brilliant moves of our management and what kind of impact it leaves on them?

Do you mean this guy?

"NET/NET"

"Fortune 50"

"Think......"

Yes we've noticed.

Agree - this is not a forum for NEWS about IBM in general but for layoff related issues and some carping about Ginny and her management of the firm that produces layoffs. Sometimes some rumors show up too. Generally facts. So quit posting news about Big Blue.
