Thread regarding Sears layoffs

SEARS HOME SERVICES/THEY MURDERED AN ICONIC COMPANY W/ LAMPERT AS THE GODFATHER

After 26 years working in Sears Home Services I too was laid off. The lack of reasoning on who is being let go versus who is not is staggering, The people who showed up every day year after year, placing their nose on the grindstone when they got to work and pulling it off only to shake their heads at those that got away with doing little of nothing for Sears or customers or fellow employees. Watching years of incompetent leadership that felt and managed like they were entitled. They were the anti-servant managers. Those that actually know the business are almost all gone now.

Years of drinking the Sears Kool-Aid left me believing what they said "WE WILL REWARD OUR BEST EMPLOYEES". I watched executives one after the other have "replacements" which were pushing $120,000,000.00 at one point.

A new set of senior leadership and our VP gave replacements to our Director, who gave it to my direct Sr. Manager, who gave the project to me to execute. I was ecstatic that something had the potential to be so impactful had landed in my lap.

I created a plan to reduce replacements and my team executed it flawlessly; reducing replacements in our division by 50% saving ten's of millions of dollars. We were rewarded with a pizza party, while our Director and VP took credit at the senior level for everything as though it was their plan.

Then to add insult to injury, there were senior executives, that were aware days in advance of being let go that only did a bunch of busy work moving from project to project. While somebody like me was dealt with; by having their director walk into my office with HR on speakerphone followed by my boss in tears telling me I was being let go and HR would explain over the phone and go through "THE PACKAGE" a whole 10 weeks of severance for 26 years of loyal service.

Of course I also had a $3000 loan from my 401K that must now be paid back and if I can't they close down my 401K and I pay penalties even though I'm within 4 months of being able to do it without penalty.

It was not all bad as I raised a family and met many friends that I would not have met otherwise. Besides, I'm too old to hold resentments so this is me cleansing Sears out of my life.

Like any bad relationship they all end...RIP SEARS HOME SERVICES

@WzeAG49 > "The lack of reasoning on who is being let go versus who is not is staggering, ..."

This is actually pretty easy to understand. First everyone goes into a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is first sorted by salary, highest to lowest. The second sort criteria is length of service, longest to shortest.

Once sorted an arbitrary cutoff is established and everyone above the cutoff row is out.

I watched a lot of good appliance techs walk out the door.our group had about 130 techs 2 years ago now there is about 25 .they have this enormous overhead now buildings, repair centers but they don't repair anything there.they just sit behind computer's and track techs every movement. A@E meat grinder. Glad I'm out

if I ever watched a Sears truck pull up to my house for an appliance repair ,, and they were on time ,, I would be dreaming , and if they were able to fix the problem ,, thats another dimension all together !

The environment at STAC was that of a toxic dump while I was there ! I remember an E-mail techs received when the program for reducing replacements was implemented , it said if any steps in the guidelines were missed by a tech it would be considered fraud ... A legal threat basically against the people that were actually doing the work to try to make this so called plan work . We were already doing this but an added layer of bureaucracy was added that slowed things down . Statistics can be manipulated to reflect success . Plus , dont log in to work 3 minutes early , or 1 minute late , dont log out 1 minute early or go over on your break or lunch by 1 minute , dont leave your desk to go to the restroom between breaks or you get written up as they say , get a few of those and they can fire you at any time for no other reason so they dont have to pay unemployment when they need to lay people off . The op and his tearful boss made going to that place for work like going to a funeral every day .

They can't shut down your 401K because of the loan. You just can't pay into it any more. If you can't pay back the loan it becomes income to you and you pay taxes on it as ordinary income. Any penalties would be if you are under 59 1/2 and that would be state and federal. Good luck and thank you for your commitment and pride in your work.

"I also had a $3000 loan from my 401K that must now be paid back"

Talk to credit unions in your area. They may be able to offer you an emergency loan at reasonable interest rates to replace that money.

It's a bankrupt company in 2018. If you were expecting severance you shouldn't have boarded the short bus.
