Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

All companies falter now and then. Intel will be back on track.

Can't wrap my head around as to why people want to see others lose their job. Yeah Intel has manufacturing issues but it's doing just fine with 14nm. Really high revenue and for all those doomsday folks, it won't go down to half of its revenue in 2 years. As long as x86 rules the software industry, Intel will be safe and that is not gonna be replaced by anything else anytime soon.

Yahoo, GE, AOL, Motorola, K Mart ... I'm still waiting for them to get back on track.

I remember PSO telling everyone when he went all in on mobile that x86 would win mobile due to billions of installed windows PC and software compatibility and virtuous cycle of process lead, desktop and sever blah blah blah.

Well the innovator’s arrogance missed the ARM scale and virtuous cycle.

Spin forward 7 years and TSMC and Samsung have process leadership, scale and development resources to spend and build more.

ARM is everywhere and growing faster and on leading edge node sooner than PC and sever. Really sounds like respin of what PC did to minicomputer, workstation and mainframe. Ask how IBM, DEC and others are doing, some survived others morphed the business and some went belly up.

Not a good time to be leadersless and think milking it and having record profits and revenue means all is good.

OP - I dissagree with you but it is nice to have a dissenting opion once in a while - most of us here on TLO have a fairly solid doom and gloom POV

Apps and arm architecture are beginning to rule the roost. Say goodbye to your jobs and competitive advantage.

IBM: Microcomputers are a fad, they'll never move on from mainframes and big iron

Also IBM: We invented the PC

Kodak: We invented the digital camera

Xerox: we invented GUI operating systems

Oracle: this cloud thing will never take off, enterprises will never trust off premises companies to manage big data

Blackberry: a phone without buttons?! Hah!

Retailers: No way people will buy shoes without looking at them

In case you haven't noticed, even Microsoft considers the desktop legacy these days. Azure is their future, and x86 is 2% of wafer real estate when they care at all.

Sears thought they had nothing to fear from Walmart. They're from Arkansas for Chrissakes!
