Can hybrid cloud become a winner for IBM?

I can understand the need to find a new direction for the company, keeping in mind the lack of direction and innovation that IBM faced during the years, and hybrid cloud is, most certainly, a market of the future, so I don’t generally consider this to be a bad plan, but the devil is in the details, and a lot will depend on innovation, and on the ability to deliver quality solutions on the hybrid cloud market. Unfortunately, knowing the company practices and the ways that things are done at IBM, I don't see that as something that could happen likely.

Hybrid-cloud could be a winner for IBM... we just need the right leadership... that evidently means no Rometty and a new CEO from the outside... may be the Red Hat CEO? We can only hope!!!

Too many years of IBM investing in stock buybacks at MUCH higher prices than the stock is today vs investing in developing real public cloud. Now playing catch-up and overpaying for acquisitions. Stupid management decisions and the same clowns are still running the company.

@2qfw - great point. Legacy architectures aren't suited for cloud. Cobol isn't cloud-ready, and never will be. The migration path there is to abandon the ancient platform and code and move the business function to a modern system. Bonus - you get to stop paying the MLC tax, and having to deal with IBM pestering you to deploy all the software they packed into the ELA that you didn't want.

FNFH. I believe the difference between public cloud, and hybrid cloud actually has some merit I have been involved with several “LARGE Enterprise” customers trying to migrate off of very large legacy application that reside on Z and Power. Most of the application continue to reside on the legacy machines, due to database issues and the Gordian knot of old SW. Every single one of the migration efforts ended up keeping the legacy, and putting in a front end to access the legacy and deliver ease of use and s-xy “modern” looks to the legacy applications. THUS my belief that Hybrid May have merit. NOTE I said “may”. When all of these companies went to Amazon, Google, and Microsoft and said we want to move to your cloud, the reply back was “we can do it, but it’s going to cost a small fortune and take a very very long migration effort”. One of the major issues continues to be the spaghetti of “old” SW that no one has experience with anymore. The folks who wrote it, and supported it, have long ago retired. YES you can see the code, and YES you can modify the code, but the effort is gargantuan Most “Enterprise” think Fortune 500 companies just put front ends on and continue to modify around the legacy edges instead of ripping the legacy out by the roots. In the words of Buffet “the moat surrounding the legacy is quite extensive”

IBM talks about hybrid because they don't have a public one. Hybrid is code for 'please keep buying our old on prem c-ap so we can milk the assets for a few more years before killing them off'.

IBM was all over hybrid cloud prior to acquiring Softlayer. Since then, IBM has focused mostly on a cloud-first meme that has managed to s--- all forms of life from Softlayer. Now hybrid is back!

Hybrid cloud is a temporary opportunity for as long as businesses don't trust a public cloud environment. In a few years there will be no need for hybrid cloud and IBM will be in the cold.

Cloud is a low-margin cut-throat business. IBM does not stand a chance. Competition for hybrid cloud is the usual players: Amazon Microsoft Google, etc. IBM is way behind and falling further behind Amazon and Microsoft. IBM will grow slowly, claiming an ever-shrinking share of a growing pie, which will eventually reach saturation and then IBM's cloud revenue will begin shrinking.
