Sears was toast a day after Kmart merger closed, says former Sears Canada CEO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX6-lPXsUZg

"Sears Holdings was toast a day after Kmart merger closed, that was the merger between Kmart and Sears Roebuck. There was never a strategy that would ever have been viable given the way Lampert chose to run the business. From Day 1. And I've been saying that literally for all that time. This was an apocryphal outcome that just had to happen. And the notion that there's been some turnaround or some transformation that's been in place is just plain bogus"

I don't think having corporate people go to the stores is a bad idea in principle. Eddie could certainly benefit from experiencing the travails from an associate's or member's perspective.

I do remember him (Alwyn) telling the story about the 'traffic ticket' in one town hall... was that maybe 2006-7 or so? Also, his requirement about having corporate people work in the stores. I recall working at Wood field mall Sears a couple of times... and then again at Stratford square Kmart (now closed). Before sending people to the stores there should have been some crash course training, it doesn't make sense to send people to stores if they don't know what they are supposed to do. The stores don't have time to babysit all these visitors.... his plan was unproductive the way it was executed.

Good ole Eddie and crew. Buck never stops with them. It's always some guy 11 years ago, or the Communists or whatever.

And he would walk the halls at Hoffman and randomly stop in an office and ask the person to recite the corporate goals or whatever they were called. You'd have to submit an email apology if you messed up. How is that a way to run a company as CEO? I'm surprised he didn't make people stand in the corner for 30 minutes or drop and do pushups. But, of course the results of that great management style are where we are at now. That and the other Eddie lackeys.

And Alywin was great at telling the story how a year after moving to Illinois he still didn't get his license plates changed and got a ticket in Hoffman. Yep. I'd want to tell people what a mo--n I was.

I'll take fried chicken over Eddie any day of the week. People like themselves some KFC. From what I see, every Potbelly I've ever been to has way more foot traffic than Sears. Probably can't blame him for anything either. How about we invest in. . . "What's the ROI?" "What's the ROI?" There's a reason every Sears and Kmart looks like a museum exhibit from 1998.

@1aqd - Unfortunately, the "retail skills" he learned at KFC never surpassed those of a busser.

@1cwo - You mean All-Wind Lewis. Spewing ineffective verbosity was his only talent! He contributed nothing to SHLD.

KFC is where he learned his retail skills.

The only chance we had was to shutter/liquidate Kmart and pour all resources into Sears in 2005. Hiring an incompetent buffoon like Aylwin Lewis to oversee the merger was a huge mistake as well. I’ve seen more effective managers at Wendy’s.
