TSMC vs Intel

In the same time one goes 20->7nm. The other one goes 14->14++++++++nm

If ur mule needs to move ur gold a mile, but said mule has been stabbed 59 times... U don't individually put band aids on the stab wounds. U bring the mule to a Vet and use another one to move ur gold....

Actually TSMC is the only game in town for manufacturing advanced silicon. With AMD embracing them as well in 2019 x86 products will be a node ahead of intel for a good year or more if 10nm slips anymore than the three years it already has

@ofs - The 'Virtuous Cycle' deserves its own FUBAR category.

FUBAR # 1) setting too aggressive target and not having dialogue with partners about risk versus reward and adjusting as data became obvious of the issue

FUBAR #2) arrogance of LTD and everyone else not changing when the scope of of the problem had changed SA to MM is just one small change not nearly enough for TMG

FUBAR #3). PSO and CRB allowing the disruptive mobile market to grow without them as they circled the wagons on their goldmine. Classic innovators delema, protect margins over new lower margins growth threat.

“When smartphone sales took off, phone makers used other processors from companies like Qualcomm. Or they designed their own using ARM technology, like Apple. And TSMC factories churned these components out.

The smartphone business is now almost six times as big as the PC industry by volume. That’s given TSMC the advantage of high-volume manufacturing experience that previously belonged to Intel.”

“According to Goldman Sachs, the combined budgets of TSMC’s customers are not only larger than Intel but the gap is increasing. By 2020, they will spend almost $20 billion, according to its estimate, at least $4 billion more than Intel.

“They’re a self-fulfilling prophesy now,” said Debora Shoquist, executive vice president of operations at Nvidia. "They are the best and the best go to the best.”

FUBAR #4). Believing the virtuous cycle was unpenetrable, maybe that is FUBAR #2)
