If you didn't beat last years numbers you failed. You are in a downward projection. The unsecured creditors will use it a reason to shut down and liquidate the stores. The company has to exceed last year's numbers in the open stores to show a positive outlook and future success.

Holiday sales numbers are actually material to convincing the judge that Sears shouldn't just go ahead an liquidate the whole shebang in Ch 7. If sales have totally cratered, the unsecured creditors have a strong good argument that the company is just throwing good money after bad by keeping the stores open
