Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Heard A Rumor

I heard a rumor at first that Walmart was gonna buyout 20 plus year associates. I am now hearing its 10 plus years. Which if all is it true? I have been with Walmart for 14 years. Just curious. Also heard alot of changes but don't know what they are.

I would encourage you folks to examine other supplier companies that have done very similar things - Campbell's, for instance, has gone through 2 "reorganizations" in the last 10 years that specifically targeted employees with more than 15 years, and the latter one had 100% participation in the buyout for early retirement. They ended up with a company that was largely populated with employees with anywhere between 1 to 14 years in the company, with the only longer serving employees being the leadership who continued to be insulated from those kinds of cuts, because they were the ones doing them.

At home office everyone is talking about how they’re getting rid of people with 10 to 15+ years of service or anyone who is 45+ years or has had health issues.

Maybe it’s not targeted. But it sure looks that way to most of the folks I talk to.

WM has in fact been laying off those with 20+ years along with a few sprinkles of 13-15 year Associates thrown in for good measure at HO for the past 6 years. It’s called getting rid of expenses. Cuts in the field have been more target to positions & combining job responsibilities with a focus on getting rid of middle management. Adding tools to do more with less headcount. Also a way to cut expenses when increasing wages at store level. This way can do a PR piece of increase wages while letting people go to shield from bad press. That’s how it goes these days.

@leftWMTin2016 Whomever owns the gold makes the rules. Ever hear that saying? I was a 10 year associate in the HO and left in 2017. I departed before they dropped me off at the curb like trash. I saw the writing on the wall. Before I left, the HO was getting rid of associates that were 50 years or older, 15+ year associates and those that used their medical benefits that cost the company such as heart surgery or cancer.

WM no longer values their 'associates.' It's been that way in the workforce everywhere for a long time now. Where once associates were valued for their ideas and suggestions, they are now considered an expense that can be replaced on a whim. They want you to just shut up and do your job because leadership has never stepped into a store to see how the real world works and they know better than a 20 year associate. (<- That last sentence was sarcasm.) Their business decisions are made to keep the 5% at the top employed along with keeping their shareholders happy. And I'm not talking about the average worker that has $5k or $10k in stock. I'm talking about the Walnuts who own the majority of the stock.

Hey @ leftWMTin2016, Why did you leave WM? I think the OP has every right to post what they want. You are the type of person that thinks they know everything and probably don't know s--t!! You didn't have to be so dang rude!! Oh by the way OP i have heard that rumor, but only for 20 year associates. And i have also heard that the point system is changing, and some ASM, will be eliminated or moved. Also GM dept mngrs will be going to teams, and will be like Fresh area is now. Also heard if some CSM's that are not eliminated, that they will have more responsibility. CSM's in my store are already taking care of PUT! Hope this helps you OP a little.

If your were to make 500.34$, With Your Expenses at 478.09$,Leaving you with 22.24$ in your pocket and "falling over the weeks". Walmart's will follow other's very soon unless expenses are cut very soon.

Makes zero business sense at all. For those who put any type of merit in this rumor what has WM every done historicaly that leads to the ideal they would do something like this?

More baseless info.

@Anonymous maybe he will, but the "peeons" he cuts will be for a valid business reason. They're not performing, or they've peaked in terms of value, or their salary is at the top of their salary band, or their skill sets aren't important to the future of Walmart, or a combination of those things. Having worked at Walmart for 6 years I can tell you there is plenty of fat to justifiably cut. Walmart doesn't owe its employees a lifetime job, especially if they're not performing.

Saying they're going to lay people off just because they have 20 years of service is like saying he's going to lay everyone off who drives a Toyota to work. What does that have to do with performance?

I have seen alot of changes and nothing surprises me anymore. I didn't say i believed it but who knows with all the changes im hearing coming? Doug Mcmillin might be here 20 years or more..but that don't matter to us or him. They will cut little peons like us first before he goes.

What would be the point of buying out people using a single identifier (20 year associates) that has very little to do with performance in a current position?

Doug McMillion is a 20 year associate, so why would the CEO who meets that criteria make a blanket decision like that?

Think through the rumors you hear before posting something like this. If you've been at Walmart that long you should be smart enough to figure out that the rumor is baseless.
