CenturyLink to trim workforce by 175 jobs, cuts holiday bonuses

CenturyLink is trimming its workforce by approximately 175 jobs in locations across the 16 states that it serves, a spokesman confirmed this morning.

The same spokesman said that CenturyLink decided to discontinue holiday bonuses for its employees.

"As part of CenturyLink’s ongoing effort to remain cost-competitive and align resources with customer demand, we will offer voluntary separations to select union-represented field operations employees," the spokesman wrote in an email to FierceTelecom this morning.

I have come up with a name for what has been going on for almost 20 years in this company in whatever name you want to call it.

"Corporate Waterboarding", stress threats, fear, 24 x 7, then the extermination of workforce elements and support with a you are over paid Monkey comments or Clowns.

I think we can all agree that working here in any position is stressful. Constantly layoffs and the decision to outright cancel the Christmas bonus doesn’t help morale. When we talk about it being slow right now, the company has artificially slowed us to a crawl due to budget slow down and of course it’s the season as well. We are in an economic boom right now and the company has decided to sit on their hands and play this game with their unionized work force rather then attacking the market. If this is what’s going on with Centurylink now can you imagine what’s going to take place when the economy slows down and the real crunch has to take place? Stay or go... find your happy place and accept fate.

Everyone's turn will come. Be careful what you wish on to others. It might be you next. You might be what others consider dead weight... Its not the years that make someone dead weight...

175 jobs across 16 states. Actually could be a lot worse. Hope a lot of people take the vspp offer. I’m a net tech. There’s a lot of dead weight( techs with 30+)years that need to go.

Its just a curious thing how they keep whittling away at craft, but the management side of the house has basically stayed the same. less craft, less supervisors?

This forum is for leaving messages about possible layoffs and packages being offered. Its not a forum to be rude and air grievances. There is no need to be name calling and using offensive language in referring to other employees.

Its just rude...

The affected employees just have some decisions to make. To stay or not stay. To take the package if it was offered or not to take the package.

Whatever each employee decides is up to them and how it will affect them and their family.

If you decide to go, good luck on your new journey. If you stay, thats ok, it just wasn't time for you to go yet.... Hopefully things get better within the company.

Eventually the packages will stop if they don't get the numbers they want. The layoffs may start. Hopefully that doesn't happen for awhile..

Merry Christmas and Good luck to all..
