Never tell your old employer where you're going. Simply ask them why they are asking. Usually they will drop the question after that.
I read this and, intellectually, know that yes, it's smart not to burn bridges when HR is asking a question like that. But yeah, good for you. Hope it works out.
Bro HR has to ask those questions. They are just doing their job.
Leave on good terms and do not burn bridges.
