You always give IT guys severance. Always. The last thing you want is disgruntled IT guys hanging around knowing they've been terminated counting down the days.

@1iml Yes, this is a common concern/practice for large companies.

Maybe the warn was not issued to keep operations running as smooth as possible. 60 days of unhappy people sitting behind company computes could do a lot of damage

WARN is an acronym for a law that says companies laying off a bunch of workers are supposed to file a 60-day advance notice with the state. Sears uses severance pay to avoid having to actually file 60 days in advance, since the (full-time) workers keep getting paid that long.

So WARN was submitted for the local Kmarts & Sears but not HE? My my my.

Eddie is biased. Having done both Corp work & in store work myself, I can tell you that in store work is harder than the desk work.

Been through this back in June...

What you need to do is:

  1. Immediately file for unemployment if employed in Illinois

  2. If you are entitled to pension benefits I would suggest doing the paperwork and getting the annuity ASAP, you need some cash flow ASAP

  3. Prepare for COBRA until you can find health insurance on healthcare.gov. In some cases there might be a waiting period of 30 or 60 days so you'll need COBRA to cover that gap

  4. Get your 401K money out of there and roll it into an IRA (direct rollover)

  5. Post a resume on Dice, Indeed or monster.com ASAP, after you post your resume you'll probably get some calls

  6. Log onto the sears websites like 88sears.com every day and check your secure mailbox on a regular basis. Often they will send you a message there instead of regular mail.

  7. Sign the severance waver, don't bother spending 250 or 300 bucks for an attorney. Just take about an hour to actually read the fine print very carefully... fax it to them. Follow up 2 or 3 days later and make sure they are working on it.

  8. You also might need to fax a form to HR regarding your domestic partner or spouse as proof of medical coverage, you'll need a copy of their I.D. Follow up with HR to make sure they received and processed it.

  9. Check Layoff.com every other day as sometimes folks will post valuable info here... sure, there is some useless info, but I have found this site to be a valuable tool in general

  10. Get your finances together, create an emergency budget plan, go over all your expenses, what your cash flow is and look for items you can do without until things get back to normal. You can write off COBRA expenses on your tax return for 2018... keep track of all medical expenses.

@xbc IT stands for Information Technology. It is the division that helps to keep SHLD's antiquated equipment running. If they're starting to cut the folks from IT, they likely know that the company won't be around much longer!!

Its like we can say we never saw it coming?? Thanks Eddie for the Severence and giving Sears all that money to keep it floating......I hope the remaining people get the same!!

SHLD intentionally didn't file WARN with Illinois for HQ employees so they'd all get 60 days severance, although they could have and should have. That money for severance is coming straight from the bankruptcy lenders and will simply take needed cash away from the ongoing operation and chance of staying open.

So, good job Eddie, taking care of corporate workers over bondholders and lenders. Seriously, genuinely, well done! For all HQ employees laid off today, sorry it came to and end, but go celebrate your 60 days of found money and enjoy the 6 months of Illinois umemployment benefits - you'll find a job in 8 months. Don't worry tonight. You'll be fine. Life goes on and it gets better.

Note - they did bother to submit WARN for the closing Sears and Kmart locations.

Received 60 day severance w/ WARN and vacation day payout.

Was in first morning group, are the layoffs really happening all day Wednesday and Thursday?

I guess when you only have 500 stores you don't need 2,000 at a HQ.
