Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

COBRA

I was laid off. Do I still have to sign up for open enrolment? How many of you are going with COBRA. If not COBRA then what? FYI I'm in California

Open enrollment at Covered CA through January 15.

IIRC starting in 2019 there will no longer be any penalty for not having health insurance, a provision of Trump's recent tax cuts.

Cobra is through your former employer but they don’t subsidize it so extremely expensive. When I was laid off, I wanted no further ties to Mattel so I found one offered by state that was cheaper and as good coverage with same health care organization. Good luck! And yes not sure if rules have changed but you have to be insured at least 9 months of year or else you get penalized at tax time. Most places also only allow you to enroll around new year so if you miss the window you end up having to buy very expensive c-appy health insurance.

COBRA is ridiculously expensive. Go to coveredca.com—that’s the website for the affordable care act. You put in your income and they tell you if you are eligible for a subsidy. Then you’ll get a long list of plan choices from many different insurance companies—bronze, silver or gold from that each offer different coverage, deductibles, etc. We should have better coverage in this country, but we are run by corporations, so. Good luck!

I found cobra was more expensive than other state options. Shop around.

Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, you pay 100% of the premiums iirc

Look into short term insurance though ACA. Find one that suits your needs... with the recent changes, you can stay on it for a year or more. It may be a better option for you than COBRA.

There should be details in your severance paperwork. Reach out to your HR rep for clarification. I was lucky enough to be covered by my spouse. Insurance is mandated. Check out a personal kaiser plan.

The annual enrollment is for the 2019 calendar year. People have been offered different situations with benefits, but if your medical benefits are over and you don’t have other options (for example, going on a spouse’s health plan or have found a new job with benefits), you may want to enroll in COBRA. Best of luck to you, and hope things go smoothly!
