Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel will supply 5G modems to Apple for the 2020 IPhone lineup

This news doesn’t come as a big surprise, given that Intel is already an exclusive supplier of modems for iPhones, but it comes as a relief as rumors are emerging that Apple isn't satisfied with the current modems that are supplied. We all know how big a customer Apple is on the modem market and what it means to us in terms of revenue. Think it is important to deliver a good product and in that way secure our role as an exclusive supplier because the 5G modem market is yet to blossom, as the technology becomes used widely.

Modem is just a connectivity part. Several RATs are being phased out (CDMA, 3G, 2G eventually). So why should they spend huge effort to on legacy technology?

@1vuc. Why there would be no benefit for Apple to build their own modem ? The way to go forward is for them to build and integrate their modem with their Axx series processor.

@phe People have been claiming for 10 years that Apple is building its own modems, without any proof and without any results.

Only people who know NOTHING about the modem business and about how a modem is designed and verified would think that Apple could build their own modem quietly in the background. And only such a clueless person could think that they would benefit from building their own modem.

Ask Mediatek !

Intel modems could find themselves displaced by a better product.

Apple already building their own modems, Intel has zero long term prospects in this contract.

I was told or read that Apple does not like to rely on one supplier in case the supplier has production issues? Good news regardless.
