Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Urban myth

If anyone believes Amazon (or any other retailer) is going to rescue Walmart workers with higher starting wages, better benefits, etc., you are tragically deluding yourselves.

Hourly, non-management retail is unskilled labor literally anyone can do. That's why it does---and should--pay so low. It's like fast food or farm hand or nursing assistants, these jobs aren't supposed to pay much. .... Amazon is doing what Target does when they expand into new areas, baiting other experienced retail help into applying. Those folks get on board, and then BAM----the carpet gets pulled out from under them.

Want better pay? Get some education / voc. tech. training.

And that's the funny part, nobody even needs a special skill set to make 15+. Every factory and distribution center (including Walmart DC) in my town is hiring and they all start at 16+ an hour. All it takes is the ambition to fill out an app.

why do opponents of a higher min wage immediately jump to “why not (ridiculous amont of money)”

nobody in the US is going to get rich on $15/hr. it’s a reasonable min wage for hat might allow more people to get by on ONE full-time job.

Quit paying stockholders and CEO’s so much and you wouldn’t have to worry about “inflation” roll it out to the consumer. How come more companies are going to $15?

Walmart isn’t exempt from the real world!

$30 an hour is not considered “rich”

Good grief people! If that’s true I’m passed that point.

I guess the other companies can get left behind. No hiring pool for you!

Walmart’s hiring pool is almost zero as it is!

Good luck for the holidays and tariffs!

Why stop at 15? Why not 30 minimum, we'll all be rich👍 Lol. Inflation is 17% since 2009 when minimum was last raised. Add that 17% to 7.25 and you get $8.50. In other words minimum should be raised to 8.50 to adjust for inflation. Get real or get a new job because 15 ain't gonna happen.

People need to be a little more realistic here, minimum should be raised but it sure as hell won't be 15 anytime soon. Fortunately there are jobs that pay 15+ literally everywhere right now, and anyone with a pulse can find one with a little effort.

All of these comments sound like they are written by low wage earners who begrudge others for wanting to earning a living wage ($15 an hour).

Yes, fighting at the bottom over money is exactly what the big companies and their henchmen, the Republicans, want to hear. The more fighting, the more divided we become.

If minimum wage is higher the inflation will kill those of us making over $15 hr. Raises should be given across the board. I've worked my azz off for $18.5 hr and some kid that doesn't give a sh*t about anything is gonna come in at almost that much. That's BS! We have a guy at my store that is nick named Sid Sloth because it takes him 20 minutes to walk from the time clock to his dept. Then stands around all day doing nothing. Why on earth should he make $15 hr? Minimum wage is fine. You want more, earn it by working hard.

Pretty ridiculous article by "inequality.org" lol. That being said even the article mentions 10.55 as the highest inflation adjusted minimum wage. You wanna push for higher minimum wage then be realistic. People are laughing at you if you think it should be 20+. 10 bucks an hour is plenty for a 16 year old kid stocking shelves on his first day.

The minimum wage should be over $21 an hour. This article explains it.

You can’t buy a coffee without it being close to $10 dollars. What gives people the right to say cart pushers and movie employees shouldn’t make $15? Just to afford basics in the 21 century. People in prison probably have it better than making $7,25 in the real world. They get it all free! Even right down to cable tv. Some people can’t afford to eat or pay rent.

All companies got a huge tax break!

Wait until the government gets smart and raise federal wages and force companies to do the right thing! They should make companies to pay all the money back when they hired someone and they had to be on government assistance. Tax the companies for the fact they can’t pay a living wage!

No living wage equals no business!

All these companies giving billions to stockholders and upper management and they can’t pay living wages? Those days will end! The federal minimum wage should be at least $15! When’s the last time you pushed carts for Walmart? I’m sure the weather changes and the millions of people that shop there a day! A lot of carts in 30 minutes. What’s wrong with giving them$15?

Everyone has the right to their opinions!

Some countries have starting pay over $20 an hour! More money for people to simulate the economy on $15. $7,25 is crazy after 10 years! Time is up!

"Here are five facts about the minimum wage and the people who earn it: 1Adjusted for inflation, the federal minimum wage peaked in 1968 at $8.68 (in 2016 dollars). Since it was last raised in 2009, to the current $7.25 per hour, the federal minimum has lost about 9.6% of its purchasing power to inflation.Jan 4, 2017" Inflation adjusted minimum wage is nowhere near $23 an hour but thanks for the laugh 👍

23 an hour is almost $48,000 a year. That’s assuming that you get to work a full 40, which most people don’t. And in most states and cities, that still isn’t enough to live on.

If minimum wage had kept up with inflation over the years, we would be at about a $23 minimum wage. So $15 an hour still means American workers are getting robbed.

Also, your remark about paying a kid $23 an hour to push carts doesn’t paint the whole picture. Since the collapse of manufacturing in the US, most of retail is adults with families. It used to be that America made stuff for a living. Now we work retail for a living or work in the service industry.

Those industries used to justify their low wages by saying they were built to employ people who were working for supplemental income (like kids). Now those industries are many people’s only income. If manufacturing is gone away and we refuse to pay people a living wage for retail or service work, where is the middle class supposed to work?

This explains why the middle class has been shrinking. It also explains our deficit. We’ve literally been borrowing money from China to subsidize the former middle class worker because the type of jobs that are left to them don’t pay a living wage.

If you’re willing to go to work for 40 hours a week, you shouldn’t have to have government assistance to live. It’s time to bring dignity back to good honest hard work.

Depending on the source, minimum wage, with yearly cost of living adjustments since it was enacted, would be $15 to $22 an hour in 2018. Amazon is just catching up to the bottom of that scale. While WM...... yeah........

Can’t leave wages at $7,25 when cost of living is going up every year. Not my fault the government and companies didn’t raise wages a little at a time each year for 10 years.

College is the biggest racket on the planet. Most people do not need to go to college to do the jobs they end up in. Instead, greedy for profit colleges conspired with employers to be the gateway into the middle class.

Then employers conspired to get rid of the middle class.

These days kids would be better served going to trade school instead of getting a four year degree, being in crippling debt, and winding up a wage slave at Walmart.

By the way, $15 an hour is only $30k a year and that’s if you get to work a full 40. That’s still not enough to live on. The minimum needs to be about $23.

Welders in my area are only making $13 an hour (Albany, Oregon). Years ago in CA the going rate for a welder was $35 an hour. I have no idea what it is now.
