Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Urban myth

If anyone believes Amazon (or any other retailer) is going to rescue Walmart workers with higher starting wages, better benefits, etc., you are tragically deluding yourselves.

Hourly, non-management retail is unskilled labor literally anyone can do. That's why it does---and should--pay so low. It's like fast food or farm hand or nursing assistants, these jobs aren't supposed to pay much. .... Amazon is doing what Target does when they expand into new areas, baiting other experienced retail help into applying. Those folks get on board, and then BAM----the carpet gets pulled out from under them.

Want better pay? Get some education / voc. tech. training.

You could argue this all day long, but every company should provide employees with a living wage regardless of education or background it’s a basics. The federal minimum wage should be already over $19 an hour. Just because you know what degree to go after yesterday, doesn’t mean that secures you for tomorrow. There are college educated people that are homeless!

Degrees are as good as what you do with them. Whether it’s a master’s degree, vo-tech in skilled trades, online code school- none of it means anything if you won’t go where the jobs are. Taking your education and training back to your c-appy no-jobs area is a waste of your investment in yourself.

An education is great but doesn't mean a great job. I have a cousin with a masters degree and works at subway because shes now over qualified for jobs in her field. It makes no sense. I also have a friend with a bachelor's degree working at a sign making company as a receptionist. They both spent thousands of dollars and many years in school for a degree that does nothing for them. I make more than they do working at walmart. Now that's SAD!! So be very careful what kind of degree you go after. Some dont mean squat!

Any company that cannot or will not pay its employees a decent living wage should not be in business. I don't care if the employees are under educated or over educated, they deserve to be treated as humans with common living needs such as food, housing and clothing. Don't get me started on companies that refuse to pay for employee dependents healthcare insurance.

I think the government should charge Walmart for all of the welfare recipients.

Since they won’t pay their people living wage!

If you have a full time job anywhere, you shouldn’t be on government assistance.

Companies need to step up they’ve had 10 years of low wages. If you can’t afford living wage you shouldn’t run a business. Everybody uses the excuse of getting an education if you want basic needs. There’s a lot of people out there that have educations and they work fast food. There’s not enough jobs for people with an education. Those people should still make a living wage.

Low wages equals no talent, no hiring pool and no experience!

Good luck with that in the 21st-century!

Who wants to rescue Walmart?

Let them be “left behind.”

They’re disposable just like any other company.

I agree with getting an education I don’t think anyone disagrees with that. Raising the starting pay like Amazon did was still the right thing to do! They should raise the federal wage to at least $15 an hour. It hasn’t been raised in 10 years! Walmart doesn’t have to do the right thing it will just be left behind! Nobody will work for them. lol The hiring pool is been dire for many years!

The Walmart near me went from over 24 checkout lines (not that more than a handful were ever open) to about 4. Now everything is self checkout. I agree. If you don’t want to be replaced by a machine, get a skill.
