Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Cobra info

If the company or business your work for lays you off because they are bankrupt/going out of business, you lose your COBRA. It happened to me back in the "Great Recession". If you are lucky enough to live in a state that qualifies your for Medicaid based on lack of income, then you're good. Some states also have laws where you will be offered other continuous medical insurance - this is what I was able to get on - the premium is higher than COBRA.

Thought more people should see this, it was posted in another thread by @VnRhg9p-1xek.

Here's a map of which states do or don't have the Medicaid expansion.

In the non-expanded states, you must have young kids to qualify (or are disabled or a senior), in addition to extremely low income (the threshold is far lower than the federal poverty level). In the expanded states, you only need to have income below the federal poverty level. Illinois is an expanded state.

Don't want to go down a political road but this here is why it was so important to expand coverage. People need health insurance and the ones that need it the most in those 17 states, are going to run into problems.

Good luck with that i know at least 17 states did not expand coverage so there will be a lot of people without insurance

Then you better hope that you live in a state that provides public health insurance to those with no/low incomes with no waiting period.
