Thread regarding Sears layoffs

What would happen if everyone just walked off the job on Black Friday and left the stores open?

Asking for several thousand friends

Why would the seasonals walk out? They were hired on the condition that they'd work all holidays.

If anything the "permanent" associates are the ones that would walk out. Every year SHC puts out a lie to the media that seasonals would be running the show along with the "permanent" associates who volunteered to work holidays. In reality, it never works out that way. Everyone (even the OA for crying out loud) is pulled away from their Thanksgiving dinner tables and are expected to be at the store before 6 PM. Some come in much earlier, like the managers, softlines and the backroom team to do adset, pull web orders and so on. This is all mandatory, yet every year, we have way more people working than we'd ever need and everybody is standing around twiddling their thumbs or, if they have a work ethic, find projects to do around the store.

For the past three Thanksgiving sales I've been a part of there wasn't a whole lot of business. This past TG a whole 5-10 minutes went by before the first couple of customers trickled in after we unlocked our doors. The Target, Best Buy, Walmart, etc. nearby...all packed with lines reaching around the building. I noticed that even Walgreens had a crowd assembled around their doors when I drove by. After about 8 pm, the foot traffic at our store flatlined. I decided to do some long-needed deep cleaning and organizing of my department to pass the time. I dusted, vacuumed, decluttered, wiped everything down, caught up on planograms, got our RES signage back in shape, straightened up all of the cashwraps, cleaned out our department storage closet from the 20 years accumulation of junk. I got everything done (and then some) and was completely uninterrupted because there was NOBODY in the store, except for our usual shoplifter groupies who wandered in out of the blue a few minutes before midnight.

The regular seasoned employees wouldn't stage a walk out, however the "seasonals" might. Anyway the day to do the walk out would be thanksgiving since we know how much Sears and Kmart want to work their employees all day on Thanksgiving.

Management wd finally have to pull their weight and not be in the hub drinking their coffee and eating donuts for 3/4 of their shift

Maybe they wd finally wake up and see how the Mac/cashiers feel being pulled in 20 different directions at once..

What would happen? Two people might notice....the only TWO shoppers who planned to shop Sears that day. Otherwise no body would care.

Nothing would happen because there are no customers so no one would notice. Heck, even the managers might not notice because of the lack of employees working each shift. The store would still look deserted and lonely.

Either the managers would lock up the store or, more likely (because the DM/RM would threaten their jobs if they locked up and left after the associates walked out), the manager(s) would stick around and run the store themselves. Fortunately it shouldn't be too hard since DOTG/DATG at most any Sears or Kmart is dismally slow, but the lower level managers (zone supervisors and leads) are treated like c-ap and aren't paid well, just like hourly associates, so they may feel tempted to join in and walk out as well.

In reality, anybody who walked out would not be welcomed back. But who knows? After seeing how hard it is for Sears to recruit and keep replacement associates even after someone puts in their two weeks and leaves gracefully, they may beg and plead for everyone who walked out to come back, because the word is out that Sears and Kmart are NOT the place to work and the stores would grind to a halt if they tried to find replacements, possibly ending the operations of the entire company for good. I think a walk-out would prompt Sears Holdings to issue pay raises just to get people to come back. The extra expense may hasten the demise of SHC but at least people would get a pay boost for a few months or a year before their store closed or the whole company fizzled out.

Of course, for this to work, the majority of associates at all the stores would have to walk out, which is why this is not likely. Too many people are afraid of the unknown and are worried about being fired. Others want or need the money.

This has been talked about but getting everyone on board is the hard part.
