Thread regarding Sears layoffs

I was let go today. 15 years of service.

They told me I won't be getting any severance because Sears can no longer afford it. I almost cried.

O.P. Can I ask was this unexpected and if so why did you think that SHC would not keep cutting payroll. Serious question, I just dont understand when someone loses their job or their store closes and they didnt think it would ever happen. Good luck in the next chapter of your life, plenty of jobs out there.

Post a resume on any of the following sites: dice.com, monster or indeed. Create an account with contact info and upload your resume to those sites. I guarantee within a couple weeks you'll get some calls or emails. Especially someone with your experience. The job market is good right now. And.... file for unemployment NOW. You might find some health insurance info on healthcare.gov. If you work hard at this you'll have another position in a couple months, max. Also Linkedin is another good site for jobs. Good luck. Don't let Sears get you down.

As others have stated, file for unemployment ASAP.

Unemployment is overwhelming. Start reaching out to any contacts you may have out in the world. Most jobs are gotten via networking. In the meantime, take one day this week and go treat yourself. Go out and have a nice dinner. Go to the movies. It may sound like a frivolous expenditure, but for your mental health you need this. You can go into "survival mode" afterwards.

I would not be surprised if other retail spaces aren't anticipating this attrition at Sears, and 15 years is good to have on a resume. You may want to consider Apple Retail in your area. They take into account personality, not technical expertise when they hire associates. The health benefits for full time retail is the same plan corporate employees get. If you were retail management, Apple tends to hire from outside for store management.

My personal take is that you are not going to see a mass layoff, but rather dribs and drabs so Sears doesn't trigger many WARN notices. Sears will not go out with a bang, but a whimper. Now is the time for everyone to be actively seeking work elsewhere. You owe Sears nothing.

File for unemployment. I knew the ax was coming and had all my ducks lined up a week ahead of time . My " transition" went smooth.

Apply at Costco ASAP....you will only be seasonal, but if you bust your a-- and get noticed, they will likely keep you permanently. I just started supervising a department and get $27 an hour and $40 or so on Sunday's.
