Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Can I volunteer to be laid off?

Honestly, I'd consider that a life line. I want off this ride.

And if me volunteering could save somebody who would actually want to keep their job here (as much as I can't understand why that would be the case,) than even better.

So why aren't we given a chance to volunteer? Seems like a win-win to me.

no you can't legally. if you volunteer, next instance they will let you go and you will not get anything.

Looks like managers have no say in offices with massive amounts of staff (the consultation process would be too long, leaky). Small regional offices with limited staff is a different matter - some senior level consultations appear to have happened there.

HI guys,

No managers have a say in the layoff here as the list are out already and it's been decided higher up?

Yes you can tell your manager, that if there are going to be layoffs that you would like to be considered, assuming the normal severence package is applied. It is not considered a resignation, that is a stupid comment.

Most managers would like to know if someone wants to be let go. They will be given a target layoff percent, and it is stressful on the manager to choose who live and who dies. You volunteering makes it easier.

Lots of people do it at various companies. Just do it nicely...

TR don't typically don't ask for volunteers (although it has been done or names added to lists). I agree with previous comment, sit tight and hold fire. It will all be out in the open soon, and lists are probably already finalised, so you may be compromising your position.

The previous post is correct. You cannot simply raise your hand and say "I will go". But there are ways to do it unofficially. I have seen it done during layoffs in the past. It all depends of the relationship you have with your manager, and if he/she has any say in the process. You should have a conversation with your manager and ask if they have been asked for name(s), if they have that would be your opportunity to ask. I can tell you I am fairly close to my manager, and she has told me she has not been asked for name(s). The upcoming rounds will not be like anything we saw in the past. It will not be base on performance, but more likely time with the company and how much you earn. They will be looking to purge anyone that can be replaced by outsourcing or a recent graduate who will demand half of what current employees do.

Bec Volunteering would amount to, and be treated as resignation ;) so don't do it. Won't be too long now. Count down has started. Only days to go
