Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

GE Power is choking off cash flow for the whole company

GE raised lot of short term cash using it's commercial paper offers. Lower rates than bonds or bank credit. 3-5% difference in weighted average capital costs.

With ratings down, commercial paper dries up (no takers at lower rates). Cost of borrowing goes up at the same time rates are rising and debt is all time high.

Cash flow is the most important metric in any business. It is like oxygen.

Woes in power segment are choking off oxygen for whole company. It is race between fixing the cash flow in power before liquidity crisis wipes out shareholders.

It is not fatal if fixed in time. Apple came within 2 months of bankruptcy in 96 before getting Bill Gates to the rescue. Culp could become a legend if he can turn this around. Or just roadkill

Thought this was an accurate explanation of some issues tha GE is facing. Posted originally on another thread by @VU5ufaV-2tmj

The stock is heavily discounted due to cash flow issues.

Warren Buffett is looking to buy a big company - he just bought back his own stock. Some stability in GE power business for few quarters and the stock is going to double from here.

welch looks like a genius for keeping a diverse portfolio of businesses and showing growth across the board.

Long cycle businesses like ge power and aviation need short cycle businesses like credit card and insurance

Now ge is left with all long cycle businesses with cyclical markets.

Stick a fork in it, if they don’t change their strategy ticking down to chapter 11.

since 2016, commercial paper rates for GE have gone up from 0.5% to 2.6%. Now that is ending and revolving credit is going to be even more expensive. Reminds me of how poor people pay more to borrow than the rich in society. Adds to troubles they already have.
