Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Is two weeks notice really necessary?

Can I just walk out and never show up again? What's the worst that can happen? I'm so tempted to do it...

I gave my notice and used my paid time for the whole notice except time to return my vehicle. I didn’t even return my vehicle to main office as my work phone and credit cards were put on hold and I’m wasn’t going to use my personal money for gas for their vehicle. It went to a sears store and that was it. I locked everything up in it and let my now former boss know. It only pays to give notice when you have paid time off to use as they will try to tie it up in the BK if you don’t use it during your notice.

I would, like the last post said you never know. Everyone at Sears will soon be looking for a new job, including your former boss. You may end up interviewing with him/her 1-2 jobs in the future...that would not be a good look.

IDK. I'm of the opinion that you should never burn bridges if you can avoid it. You never know who you'll run into in the future. Plus Karma and all that.

But you're right in that it's not like anyone is going to get a reference, good or bad, from Sears.

I will add that with most employers you walk out on, you will likely not be rehireable, though I know of exceptions. If the employee was decent enough and had some issues outside the workplace and their employer was desperate enough to give them another chance.

But with Sears and their future, why bother coming back in the first place? If things are currently so miserable at your store, leave. There are tons of retail choices for the entry level employee in today's market.

I worked for STAC for 3 years , what an absolute nightmare , that was the worst atmosphere , every day I felt like I was walking into a funeral . When I quit , I called the attendance line and said I quit , I will not be returning to work , see ya . I had a job offer 2 weeks later and informed them about the way I left sears . They told me , no problem , we know all about sears and the way they treat employees , Then he said , I hope it felt good when you left that message !

Don't worry about references, Sears doesn't even allow your manager to say anything beyond your start date, end date and the position you worked. Somebody was actually put on a final for giving a reference (a positive one, no less) because a former Sears district manager who moved on to another company as a store manager was calling references on a former Sears employee who had applied there. That applicant's former manager at Sears gave a reference to him and he turned around and told somebody he knew that still worked at Sears higher up in the food chain (trying to be an a--) and the manager who was nice enough to provide a good reference had gotten in so much trouble that I guess the Legal department gave her a stern warning and she was put on a final. I am not sure if coworkers could be used as references, probably yes, but managers, definitely no.

NO!!!! Its NOT necessary to give 2 week notice and any reference FROM HR can only provide verification of employment dates - I would avoid using any co-worker as a reference as their not bound by the icky legal hum-drum - its your call though

You wanna just leave GO FOR IT.... a new employer could concievably also wonder why it took you so long to bail

no big employer gives a reference any more, just start and end date. Too much litigation surrounding any negative input to next employer.

@CWP pretty much. When i was interviewing for jobs and they saw Sears on my resume they didn't bother to ask. They was just like you're smart enough to get out.

Given Sears state I wouldn't bother to give notice, the worst they can do is not rehire you and there is about to be no company anyways. So just stop showing up and be done with them.

Its not like Sears is gonna be around for long. The only thing is that make sure you have a job lined up because if not unemployment will be difficult to get. If that matters to you.

Yes, you can. There is nothing they can do about it, and they have to pay you everything owed for the hours worked.

The worst that can happen is

  1. Sears will not re-hire you in the future (the "no rehire" list).

  2. Sears will give a bad reference if a future potential employer calls up for a reference.
