Intel plans to outsource their entry-level processor production to Taiwan

The outsourcing of some segments of production has been discussed for some time, but now it looks as though that plan has been set into motion. The article reports that Intel has begun extensive talks with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to outsource the production of Intel’s entry-level Atom processors and some chipsets, given that TSMS ’s facilities are the only semiconductor foundries in the world that can deliver on such a big scale. The reason for this move lies in the fact that Intel wants to react to the shortage in supply of some types of processors. I wonder will this move be an intro to some reorganizations in production in the US.

First of many rounds to squeeze cost out of TMG

Look at AMD and IBM as examples of the economy of not having fab. Even IBM with crazy enterprise and software jettisoned the fab. With 10nm failure to execute, high legacy cost of business TMG in trouble once the outsourcing starts

TSMC has huge fab scale, cheaper labor, well characterized IP and accurate Spice Models and methods to support everything from cheap IoT to full field server and GPU.

TMG is on the long slow decline to irrelevance that IBM silicon went thru.

Wonder why they didn't send it to Shanghai.

Slippery slope. Soon more and more products will want to move to TSMC.

This is what I call fighting within the castle wall syndrome. If I am an Intel Foundry Manger, I will get into the foundry business. If only TSMC can come into Intel and Intel foundry cannot go outside of Intel. We all know how that's going to end.

Expect huge layoffs in TMG as larger chunks of the business continue moving to TSMC because of TMG obsolete technology and atrocious business practices.

Smart move...would like to see more things in lower cost locations, typically quality increases greatly
