Thread regarding Pearson PLC layoffs

Looking back it's still not funny yet.....

I was let go in the fall of 2013 after almost 20 years with Pearson. I was based in the Columbus office, and worked in Production for all of career. Given the workflow redesign project, and our increased reliance on off shore vendors, my separation was not a surprise. I thought my severance package was fair, and as it had been 2 decades since I searched for a job, I welcomed the job search and placement assistance benefit. A week or so after I was let go, I contacted the Placement service to discuss how we could work together. They suggested that I come in person to meet with them, and gave me their address 455 Hutchinson Ave, which was in the same building where I worked for more a decade. When the elevator opened on the 6th floor - which as I recall was also occupied by some Pearson Marketing people, I was greeted by an Editorial Director who very rudely asked what I was doing in the office since as he put it- HEARD YOU GOT CANNED.... He believe when I told him that I had a legitimate reason to be there... He threatened to call security, got in the elevator and left....

Talk about kicking one when they are down.... That's the Pearson way

Oh, by the way, I heard shortly thereafter he was demoted, then left the company... What a jerk!

Sad that a once great company, built by a great culture and great people has spiraled into the worst definition of an rudderless corporation. I'm holding out hope that I can make it through the next round of cuts and at some point new leadership will right the ship and refocus this company on learners over shareholders.

I have moved on, and have never been happier. Landed a great position at a wonderful company, higher pay, more responsibility, and an incredible culture.

The culture of a company is developed by people - more specifically the Leadership. The man that I referred to was a product of the Pearson culture. They are one and the same.

"You are confusing a PERSON with a COMPANY. Move on...".....

I disagree....the company - not this person - assigned the outsourcing service in the same building, same floor as the Pearson office... It's tone deaf to say the least.

That is a horrible experience for sure! One not easily forgotten. I hope you found a new job that you enjoy and are appreciated. Five years is to long to hold on to that memory.

2013 was a horrible layoff process. Some would say it was cruel. I’d agree. Your situation wasn’t a one-off. The company set the tone, outlined the entire process and included a script (s). Oh let’s not forget the security guards sitting in the lobby of all Pearson offices too. Sure this guy was a jerk, but the company set the tone. The good need is that given all the practice Pearson has had with layoffs, they are getting more human.
