Unemployment in addition to severance

Somebody told me yesterday that laid off people can also collect unemployment. This sounds a bit too good to be true to me - anybody knows if this is actually a thing?

If it is (which I doubt) then getting laid off would be even less of an issue than it is right now.

My position in Hoboken was eliminated 12/31/2018. Severance package is for a year. Does anyone know if I can claim unemployment benefits during or after the severance period? I filed a claim, got a notice of benefit determination with a weekly dollar amount but when I tried to claim a payment for the first time, I got a message "your claim is not payable at this time." No reason given and not able to speak to a person on the NJ rabbit hole phone number. Has anyone else run into this? Is it because the severance is paid out over the year rather than in a lump sum? Thanks for any help that you can provide.

It's going to depend on your local/federal legislation. If advise checking with your local unemployment office, a legal advisor or HR (if you're one of the lucky few to have a competent HR function!).

In the US, the normal way is no unemployment while you get severence. However there is nuance, and it depends if the severence is paid out as a lump sum or over time. If its paid out over time (i think not your case) then no unemployment until that severance runs out

Another thing to remember is that severance is taxable, so if they dont take tax out make sure to set aside

Wait until you see how little you get with unemployment

In Michigan during the big recession a few years ago, my husband had to let his severance run out before he could sign up for unemployment. Not sure if that would still hold, but it saved us by stretching our income out until he found another job. Hopeful that will hold if the TR layoffs hit me.

In the UK you can as well, for unto 6 months. After that it becomes means tested.

If you're in the US you need to check your local unemployment regulations, varies by state. Generally if you are in the US and are laid off rather than quitting or being fired for cause you qualify. But benefits vary by state. And the amt is usually not great and is limited over time. Its something but it's not great.

Yes, in New York you can collect unemployment benefits even if you receive cash severance.
