Are stores below a certain number always Sears, and above always Kmart? I'm trying to analyze a list of the hundreds of store numbers and I don't want to look up each one.

Actually the opposite. Sears 1007-2990, Kmart above 3000. Except Sears Auto Centers are (usually) 6xxx; distribution centers are 8xxx or (Sears only) 4xx.
Sears stores have a number above 3000. KMarts have a number below that.
