Thread regarding Sears layoffs

About the only evolving Sears did was introduce the shopping cart to stores

Can you believe there was a time at sears where there was not shopping carts??

Even in 1999 they were balking at the idea of having customers push shopping carts around in stores but finally did realize it was a good idea

But there still haven’t been enough carts or the ones we do have are being used to store fixtures out of sight because of lazy employees

But at least sears did come to see that shopping carts would allow customers back then to buy more

Now customers are not buying armloads of stuff but carts are still important to offer customers

I don't think OP was trying to say Sears was the first company to use shopping carts, rather that Sears finally getting around to adding shopping carts was one of the few examples of Sears 'evolving' in the past.

Sears introduced shopping carts to stores????

Shopping carts have been around much longer than 1999 in the retail industry.

It is more like Sears was dragged kicking and screaming into the decision to introduce shopping carts to their stores....

Another example of Sears getting complacent and lagging behind the times and being a follower rather than an innovator which contributed to its downfall.

I remember before carts we had reusable totes that smelled in a short time.

I remember thinking how trashy Sears looked when they added carts.

A couple of years ago we received about 50 carts from a closing store. We now have maybe 10 carts at both entrances, and another 5 or 10 hiding around the store, filled with various junk. We never had anybody go out to the parking lot to get them, so they were plucked from our parking lot every night until they were gone.
