Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Are there any liquidation survivors out there

That could tell current employees what to expect?

Do they keep all the current employees and add theirs if needed?

Do they force you on the registers even if you’ve never done cashiering in your current role?

What is it really like to work under liquidation?

Our store closed and I needed to find another job because I need the money so I quit and looked for a job for two weeks. I applied for a liquidation helper and was hired to help liquidate the store I just left for more money than I was making if I had stayed. I dont know if they are still doing this but it was twice what I made.

I worked at a kmart that closed two years ago and no one was let go during the liquidation sale. Everyone was able to work up to 40 hours a week if they wanted. Store leadership was there until the very end they still did the weekly store. The guy in charge of the whole process split his time between our store and another kmart about 45 minutes away that was also closing.

I know of 2 store closings and people that worked at both. The Sears store was closed and the liquidation manager kept all the older employees to close the store as they had more training and staff was required to be cut for costs. The Kmart was then closing and the company they hired to manage the liquidation brought in a crew of their own and then hired temp employees who didn’t care and if you said the price is cheaper they just give it to you as they knew their job was gone on a set date. In both cases, it was pre-BK and they were given small severance packages.

Some of your regular customers will come in at the beginning, but they will often be too depressed by the sight of your store in liquidation to come back later. You will also get a number of people who have not stepped foot in the store in years, if ever, and often are fairly nasty and demanding. They will want everything for nothing. Your thieves will come out of the woodwork because they think since you're closing, it wont matter. You will get people who think they have the right to just walk into your stockrooms and back rooms to "shop" and look around, and then get mad at you when you tell them they are not allowed back there. I've worked with two different liquidators. Both were former Kmart managers from stores that closed. The first one was a nightmare, the second was a blessing. You just never know who you'll get. Good luck! I wish you the best in your job future.

The key to whether your store's liquidation is pleasant or unpleasant depends on the liquidator in charge. The liquidator who was in charge at our store was a very personable gentleman who made the process as pleasant as possible. However, according to some on this board, their liquidators were absolute jerks. At our store they kept all the associates on, brought some associates in from another Sears store in the area, and hired a few extra for the liquidation. Everyone performed their same job duties, however, with some minor changes. You will be extremely busy! Even though liquidation sale pricing is not that great, people will still flock in to buy. When your store's liquidation comes to an end, there will be a small group of associates kept on to do a final cleanup and to ship out select store equipment.

I stayed and worked through the liquidation of the Crystal River Fla. store. We were treated very well. They brought in a former Sears Manager whose job had been eliminated in cuts. Lots of hours, big trucks to unload.

Just leave if you have another job, they can’t force you to do anything
