I received 32 patents when I worked at IBM. Sounds pretty good doesn't it? In reality, it was more like 12 unique submissions that were multiplied by IBM lawyers who would change a few instances of words in claims from "method" to "system", and then declare an entirely new patent. They often got a third patent by changing "system" into "machine".

As someone else said: "Numbers over quality". They didn't try very hard to hide it.

I was involved at parenting at IBM. IBM is very good at picking a focus area and then filing patents on every niche possible. Patent numbers are more important than quality ideas, and the VAST majority of their patents will never be used in any IBM product. So being the “leader” in blockchain patents protects their right to use ideas, but it really doesn’t mean much.

2frp. IBM doesn’t care. They have adopted the DuPont strategy. Minimal marketing force, and maximum IP adoption for maximum annunity revenue. The cloud / as a service adoption mean they will focus on 5-10 go to marketing initiatives, and everything else will be dropped. This means a very very lean marketing force. The money saved will be plowed into the labs to encourage more IP discovery. The days of IBM being all things to everyone have been abandoned. Cloud go to market marketing strategy will allow IBM to reduce head count 50-60%. It will also allow approx 60% of the remaining heads to be offshores. You can do the math, as to where IBM head count is heading in the USA and Europe. Bain will take what IBM doesn’t want, and right size it for efficiency and profit. IBM labs will provide Bain with the technological advantages and IP license to them

We are top notch in crypto, but it'll take 10+ years before we start making money there

This is a post by a corporate puke trying to put a spin on a failed company.

When everyone starts getting massive bonuses and raises again then I will believe IBM is leading in something. For the time being all I hear about is massive layoffs and client contracts not being renewed. So much for Blockchain saving the day.
