Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Rehiring older employees

I was just wondering if anybody here knows if IBM ever rehires older employees it laid off a few years ago?

My dad is out of work once again, and I wanted to encourage him to give IBM one more try, but I'm not sure if that is even an option.

Should (and can) he go for it?

If he wants to work and is QUALIFIED then he should apply.
Regardless of the stories bitter people write about IBM, it cares about quality talent. That should be the main question....is his talent up to snuff? All the best.. he should shoot for the stars. Reply by a 61 year old former ibmer.

Yes, he will make 3 times as much as a contractor as well.

There is no glamour in being a FTE for IBM.

It depends on his role and the division. If it's as a consultant in services, don't bother - those are shrinking businesses (especially GTS). If he's an effective seller, and can get into one of the few areas growing, that might be worth it.

In my experience these workers only come back as contractors. If he truly wants to go back to IBM, I would suggest connecting with one of the contracting companies that works with them.

I wouldn't personally choose to go back to IBM, especially as a contractor. But your dad should go with whatever path makes him happy.

No. Save him the indignity. Instead he should market himself to companies that contract with IBM. I am 56 and changing jobs every 18 months now after a long, solid career. It s---s big time.

NO, NO and NO!!!! Just NO...Why would you want him to waste his time at IBM, its a failing company... Tell him to look for IT jobs in the Health Sector... Stay away from IBM or HPE, they are going nowhere...
