Thread regarding Riverbed Technology Inc. layoffs

Engineering Title

Does this company not have any title other than member of technical staff? How do i know if someone is more senior technical person without counting his grey hairs?

4+ years of sideways sales and ebitda. How long will TB endure this without having a layoff to improve financials? Sounds like there are areas where they can.

There are levels, at least internally to HR. I can assure you if you are a "Member of the Technical Staff", behind the scenes you have a level like "Software Engineer III".

You probably won't get a straight answer if you ask your manager about it. My guess is it's because the duplicity helps them keep pay low pay low. That is, if your experience or responsibilities justify an increase in level with a commensurate pay bump, they can just say, "We don't have a levels, sorry." But if you show them a job offer with higher pay and you get a counter, what do you think it's happening? If the offer is out of the range for your level, you get bumped up.

It's also demeaning as hell that business card and delve and everything else says "MTS" even if you're quite senior, but that's probably also seen as a feature, not a bug.

Global Support has been threatening / promising to introduce levels into TAC and Staff Eng for the past 3 years. Don't hold your breath

Right now there is only MTS and Principal MTS level (which was introduced last year I guess).

What I heard in the grape vine is the new engineering head is planning to introduce levels soon.
