Good analysis and thoughtful, well-articulated post @nil/@zve, instead of the usual trolls for a change.

@nil here - I was right on everything except the Wall Street reaction. The jig is finally up until they get a bump with a new CEO and make demonstrable progress on 10nm. Lots of institutional $$ are going to roll over to AMD since INTC is dead money and NVDA is so expensive.

BTW, did anyone notice the # of employees going back up by several thousand? See the release.

@mzx - Would suggest you listen to the AMD Earnings webcast - accessed thru their Investor page on the AMD website. There were some very specific questions on MSS for EPYC, particularly their EOY 2018 target. While I agree that the server validation cycle is quite long, that cycle has been completed for the big boys, and 7nm Rome is already sampling. Even mid-single digit server MSS by EOY will crush INTC, particularly with the 10nm debacle. INTC is cornered.

@u-nil, glad to see a smart and well written post on here for a change. The only disagreement I have with your assessment is that the AMD MSS won’t rise until 2019. While Epyic is a competitive product, the software development/validation cycle is measured in quarters not months. There is just too much downside on releasing the AMD based cloud capability until it’s fully validated.

Also, look for a hard question or two from Bernstein's SR - he got exactly the answers he was looking for on the AMD call yesterday, and will be digging deep into Intel's DCG performance tonight. He is pi$$ed off that his management made him retract his long-suffering negativity about Intel earlier this year, and he is itching to finally drive a stake into the heart of Intel and its web of lies.

Here's what will happen in INTC release today:

  • Record revenue and earnings based on strong DCG growth and particularly the ramp of SKL-EP.

  • Flat to slightly down CCG, but driven by strong mobile.

  • Decent guidance for Q3

  • More obfuscation on 10nm, but since it is coming for CFO-turned-CEO BS, whatever positive remarks will enable a one-quarter courtesy pass, albeit a skeptical one.

  • Wild-card is the CEO hunt - if they announce someone at earnings, then the stock immediately rises to mid-high 50s.

Mostly, I am predicting a slightly up read on Intel, despite the unquestioned reality of a competitive AMD. We all know the massive internal problems are going to be hard to fix, but a new CEO and continued ramp of SKL-EP will keep this stock going for at least one-two more quarters. When AMD really does get to 5% datacenter MSS by the end of 2018, then you can confidently short the stock.
