Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

This is too true

Has anybody seen this before? Have there ever been truer words spoken (typed?)

Most of employers today are ideally looking for an employee:

who has the wisdom of a 50 year old,

the experience of a 40 year old,

the drive of a 30 year old,

and the pay scale of a 20 year old.

As opposed to a straight "lay-off", based on mix of long experience&higher position on payscale, why not retain the more senior employee at a reduced salary and reduced schedule. Perhaps an option to take 13 weeks unpaid time off each year or reduction to 30 hours/weekly?

Similar to job-sharing that is becoming more common for newborn mothers who wish to spend time with their infants/younger children after pregnancy..

Absolutely correct. Finding a person that meets each of these requirements is golden. Of these requirements, the one most detrimental to an employer still appears to be age. The kick in the a-- is that older employees are stereo-typed at not wanting to learn new methods that would help them in their job. Have never, ever seen this in an older employee. They still believe anything they learn can be beneficial to them and their employer. So thus argument about "not wanting to learn" is normally trashed. Real reason is the pay scale. Companies just don't want to pay these employees for their experience and dedication. Experience translates to getting the job done correctly and on time, usually using the best approach and saving money. Companies don't appear to want this anymore.
