Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Enablers of Age Discrimination!

Age discrimination will continue to occur as long as employees continue to allow it.

@3gvs: I agree to some extent with your points.

I see a couple things different since I am right in the vortex.

Democrats used to be for the working man, now they are for the illegal aliens and lazy sloths.

Give them free food, give them free housing, give them your social security monies!

Anyone in the states will concur that the democrats have lost their way.

Union members vote democratic? Not anymore really.

The older ones used to vote democrat back when they party had some dignity.

Times have certainly changed in the last 20 years and the democrats way too far left of center.

Democrats want to screw everyone who works and pays into the system <<< that's their way

Unions are different in Europe. In Scandinavia, virtually anyone who works belongs to a trade union. Unions manage allocation of benefits, holidays, severance and resolution of grievances. Jobs must be advertised internally before they are posted externally. Internal employees get a fair shot at new positions. IBM hated this system so much, they virtually abandoned Sweden. That tells you something.

The government has less influence than in North America. They pass the laws, but it is trade unions that enforce compliance.

Democrats used to be the backbone of the worker. They facilitated the rise of the middle class after the great depression and two world wars. In the past 50 years that balance of power has switched. The working class - that most certainly includes IBM employees - is now under the watchful eyes of the Republicans. Nowadays unions are on the decline - and people are at the mercy of companies who care primarily about shareholder value. IBM workers are a shining example of how things have changed. In today's political climate, it is safe to say that the North American IBM workforce will decline even faster than it has in the past decade. Psst Ginny. Blockchain isn't going to work any better than big data and AI. All the people who could have helped, left long ago.

Some European and S. American IBM shops are union and they do have better working conditions.

ie.

I have been on several lengthy crit sits with them and while they keep getting replaced by another engineer every 8 hrs (union demand) so they can sleep/eat, I am stuck on the call until the work is completed, which in some cases has been over 24hrs straight.

Oh and OT is not approved so you will have to take flex time during the week.

That's no better? I'm gonna have to disagree with you there, sleep deprivation is dangerous.

After 11 years in a union shop, I can confirm this:

No cat on my tongue. I have been a union member. Union leaders are no better than IBM executives. They look out for themselves and their friends and screw everyone else.

The concept of the union is beautiful, in reality things get corrupt very quickly. I think that we, as humans, are inherently flawed and power corrupts. I wish we can somehow fix this and that we can push back on these large corp exploiting masses at scale - yet, I have no answer to you...

And yet so many older people are against unions.

Because why again???? Exactly, cat got your tongue.

Working without a contract is irresponsible and just plain stupid.

Especially for a company like IBM who has a long history of fisting their employees.

Stay golden Ponyboy

How am I supposed to stop it? Sue IBM on my own? They'd throw a hundred attorneys at me...

Brilliant. So what exactly do you propose we do about it? We are not law enforcement.
