@UXRN The profession no longer rewards you staring at the monitors (a CRT) all day. I don't mind sitting my buns for 8 hours, if my boss rewards me with focals increases, etc, or gestures such as boba tea, getting the spirits of the group up. That no longer the case. The boss is fixated with saving himself and chopping the salary of high paid subordinates. Surviving in your 40s is relying on what you normally do best. Once the axe falls, time to look for something you're more appreciated-- like stay at home dad (like the dad in Incredibles 2), bus driver, or another boss.

As an engineer in my forties I think I've had my fill of sitting in a cube staring at a monitor. I can't imagine still being stuck in this low class profession, staring at the same monitor, well in my 60's. I'm well aware of the discrimination against people over 40 in tech and expect the axe to fall soon. However, if I'm not shown the door in the next 5 years I'll probably find my own way out.

Yes, but I wish this is the life Intel execs look forward to. Unfortunately, they have s network, go some place else at the same or higher level, do nothing, but are rewarded for firing others. What a life!

Certainly is very sad to see that older employees who are dedicated, much more so than younger employees, can only hope that their sheer defication, and personal sacrifice to the company will be rewarded with continued employment. This is the way it used to be, a great relationship between employee and company leading to a satisfactory, lifetime career. No more, though. Companies no longer recognize this dedication as they consider older workers their highest priority target when cuts need to be made. Dedication and self sacrifice are no longer rewardable but asskissing is.
