Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM Has a Watson Dilemma

Six years and billions of dollars later, the diagnosis for Watson is gloomy.

More than a dozen IBM partners and clients have halted or shrunk Watson’s oncology-related projects.

Watson cancer applications have had limited impact on patients, according to dozens of interviews with

medical centers, companies and doctors who have used it, as well as documents reviewed by The Wall

Street Journal.

In many cases, the tools didn’t add much value. In some cases, Watson wasn’t accurate. Watson can

be tripped up by a lack of data in rare or recurring cancers, and treatments are evolving faster than

Watson’s human trainers can update the system. Dr. Chase of Columbia said he withdrew as an

adviser after he grew disappointed in IBM’s direction for marketing the technology.

No published research shows Watson improving patient outcomes.

Says it all.

Does IBM have any liability for Watson recommending these incorrect treatments?

Big article in LinkedIn yesterday about how Watson cured a Veteran of Cancer. Wow, One down.

Watson was bought to market as soon as there was anything remotely viable, then all investment stopped. That's the real cause of the slowdowns...absolutely no investment in building new things people want to buy. Want to fix IBM? End share buybacks, sell off the old commoditized plumbing and low margin services businesses, and invest that capital into either building or buying modern products people want. Given their track record though, I hope they buy rather than build.

But that would require a short term hit to the stock price (which hasn't been anything to write home about). And the current people in charge (I refuse to say leadership) don't have the stomach to tell the truth to themselves and the street.

Put it simple - Watson (Cancer) can kill.

IBM has ruined AI for Healthcare. In the beginning, small companies were grateful that IBM was "educating" the masses although more than a few were frightened that the capabilities they loudly proclaimed were wildly overstated. Now, everyone will pay the price as "AI" will become synonomous with hype and broken promises. This will hurt IBM, but, it will DESTROY small players by the dozens.

I predict Linked in will be deluged as hundreds of IBM'ers who fled to the relative safety of Watson Health start "bleaching" their resumes of words like Artificial Intelligence, Watson, etc.

IBM over hypes everything they have. They peddle decade old c-ap by renaming it and jamming it up what few customers are lefts's azzes. Blue Washing is dead, IBM is dead.

In a desperate attempt to reinvent itself, IBM over-hyped and over-sold what little they had. They've ruined 'AI for Healthcare' for a generation. Too bad. Watson's "Narrow AI", can work well when it augments expert human judgment.

You could argue that most IBM mistakes impact only investors and employees. By poisoning the well for Healthcare AI, IBM will indirectly kill thousands of people.

Nice going Watson. Let's see how many people you kill by bungling Blockchain.

yes, for medical diagnoses Watson is considered dangerous because it's giving the incorrect or incomplete diagnosis for patients. AI is far from developed whether it be for driving cars or curing diseases.
