According to engineers swept up in a major round of layoffs within IBM’s Watson division last month, the IBM's promotions of its “cognitive computing” platform mask its own real difficulties in turning its AI into a profitable business. https://spectrum.ieee.org/the-human-os/robotics/artificial-intelligence/layoffs-at-watson-health-reveal-ibms-problem-with-ai

Truven s---s. It always s---ed. It s---s now.
If Watson is so smart, why is IBM becoming a shell company based on nonexistent futures?
IBM is spamming the job boards with open positions to hide the fact that they are drastically trimming resources from their "strategic objectives". They also spam glassdoor, etc. with positive reviews.
I am ex "pre-ibm" Truven and I can tell you my colleagues who are being laid off are not being back-filled. This is a pure cost cutting measure for short term gain. The plan to use Watson on their vast Data "Lake" is completely stalled out, so, there are no new products coming out. Meanwhile, they are cutting development and support on legacy products ensuring their existing cash cows will be obsolete sooner rather than later.
Will anyone let IBM employees know how Watson scores their performance metrics? https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-07-09/your-raise-is-now-based-on-next-year-s-performance
When a company declares that they are using AI for employment decisions, does it really heed Ginni Rometty's advice about being transparent as to what goes in to the dark evaluation recipe: https://www.ibm.com/blogs/policy/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IBM_Principles_OnePage.pdf
Do IBMers have a right to know?
Obviously, this original comment is coming from Corporate Communications or HR whose job it is to monitor any online comments about IBM. Truly an a*hole who has had a few too many IBM koolaids, or is just too stupid to realize he/she is so transparent. If I were the OP, I would start looking for another job asap. Watson is not determining layoffs, determining your next raise and your potential "future" with IBM. At least they are using Watson for something......they have failed at the moonshot at health transformation and diagnoses, and no one really trusts IBM anymore, from corporate clients to employees. Why haven't they run the Watson analysis on Ginni? I think anyone with half a brain knows what the outcome would be.
It's not just pure IBMSpeke.
It's pure Sociopathic IBMSpeke.
IMA is a definite IBM troll here - nobody else would speak or compose a paragraph in that way, pure IBMSpeke.
@ima is HR.
Look at the vocabulary
-
"high-value segments"
-
"hire aggressively"
-
"deliver value for our clients"
IMA - it sounds like you are one of the corporate folks trolling this site. What u articulated is nothing but BS press from IBM trying to cover up the magnitude of the problem. Nice try, but those of in the know don’t buy your statement.
The extraordinary cognitive AI revolution of an elementary SQL query hooked up to Skype
This activity affects a small percentage of our Watson Health workforce, as we move to more technology-intensive offerings, simplified processes, and automation to drive speed. IBM is continuing to reposition our team to focus on the high-value segments of the IT market, and we continue to hire aggressively in critical new areas that deliver value for our clients and IBM
