Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Get happy, or get out

This is what a senior VP (initials ME if you're wondering) told us about 18 months ago. Since then, we've lost good people at a staggering rate.

How did this fool respond to a question about fixing issues within Hon? He again told people to leave if they don't like it here. How do these morons keep their jobs?

Congrats buddy, we lost another 10 people this month and the company has such a crappy reputation that we can't find anyone new to replace them.

Amen Brother, in 5yrs when the changing of the guard is complete. They will need to dump the company because there won't be anyone around that cares or remembers all the great things we did. Wait until Mex. and India are the only low cost regions. All the smoke and mirrors in the world won't help. Ha Ha Ha

You should get a new job. You only have yourselves to blame for working for hon. Slavery was abolished long ago... Get a new job. The job maker is in fire, if you don’t see that then you should evaluate yourself, seriously..

Other thoughts? Hon is following the GE plan. Its a matter of time. The leaders don't care about aircraft engines, thermostats, c---pit controls, fluid systems, etc, they care about cash and putting it into their pockets until it runs out. They like to be called financial wizards

As a couple years ago, pention plans no longer grow. I got out late last year at 60 yo with 37 years at Garrett/ Bendix/Honeyhell.

It worked for me.

Why do people still stay with bad management?

People will stay if they took the old pension plans. 85 points or age 60 depending upon legacy Honeywell/Allied or? So many plans for older people. The old plans are worth it if they still grow so people will put up with all the crap. They just try to avoid sticking their head out for the firing squad. Keep their mouths shut and won't rock the boat no matter how many silly things management tries. Sticking it out for 5 years is worth it in many cases. If possible we'll also try to keep any knowledge to ourselves since as management says, there is no such thing as loyalty so we don't give any to them. Do the minimum if possible to keep sane an healthy. The older folks are just trying to use Honeywell as much as Honeywell uses them.

Others 10- 20 years with Company stick it out until they can find a better job which is getting easier as the economy grows. It was harder to find jobs 5 or more years ago. Less risk now if news reports can believed.

It may be interesting to see if Honeywell will attract innovative people in another 3-5 years or they will just have to keep hiring newbies and work them hard until they get enough experience to be able to leave. Not even sure the Honeywell name means that much to outside employers anymore since they know there isn't that much training or time for people to care to innovate for Honeywell. People looking for jobs will see Glassdoor and other places and Honeywell may become a last resort until they find something better and will up and quit as soon as they can. High turnover is bad for any company that says they innovate or have motivated people.

Oh well those are my ideas as to why people stick around and what will happen when they finally leave.

Other thoughts?

4zbv -- A job well done, and challenges met should make one happy if they are in the right career field. I found that to be true for many years at was then Allied-Signal. It was bizarre that the office politics and shabby treatment, including falsified reviews, worked to ruin all that. Yeah, the company wants to shed the medical liabilities of older employees -- I get that. The other side of the coin is that for knowledge workers, most employees, their level of effort is discretionary. There's no assembly line. The company has so squashed morale and motivation that productivity has to be in the dumper. Lately the company did make me happy. Happy to be getting older and closer to retirement. Happy to finally be out of this place. While a company's job might not be to make you happy, it damned sure should provide an environment that deliberately makes you angry, depressed, and want to leave. That sounds like serving time in prison.

I was lucky and was able to get out and retire last year. I am guessing NOBODY got those YUGE raises after the YUGE tax break Honeywell was given and I am sure it stopped the flow of Honeywell jobs out of country /s. There is no way Honeywell is even going to try and make it's employees happy. If you are an older employee they just want you to leave and as soon as possible. BTW the view of the mountains didn't obscure the view of the management. They refused to release the satisfaction surveys for the last two years i was there, I wonder why?

HONs leadership style described here by Kurt Lewin:

Authoritarian Leadership

Authoritarian leaders, also referred to as autocratic leaders, are characterized as domineering. Authoritarian leaders make policies and decide appropriate division of labor from afar. They tend to be distant and aloof from their group. Authoritarian leadership is gained through punishment, threat, demands, orders, rules, and regulations. The functions of authoritarian leadership include unilateral rule-making, task-assignment, and problem solving while the roles of authoritarian followers include adhering to the leader's instructions without question or comment. Authoritarian leadership is appropriate in settings with a constant stream of new employees, limited decision-making time or resources, and the need for large-scale coordination with other groups and organizations. Authoritarian leadership is not suited to environments in which members desire to share their opinions and participate in decision-making processes. Critics of authoritarian leadership argue that the leadership style leads to high member dissatisfaction, turn-over, and absenteeism (Gastil, 1994).

My notes: over the years, Honeywell has refined the leadership hiring and promotion process to select those with the right autocratic traits. I suggested they start the JERK Academy, with mentors by the hundreds to choose from. Tell us about who you would choose!

4zvb- I agree with regards of Honeywell or any other employer making an employee happy but..,., Honeywell no longer cares about their employees specially the older long time employee. Reduced benefits, no more WFH BTW they lost many of the older long term employees with that move, reduced raises and MIPS, the list goes on & on.

So make you happy no way, treat you with the respect anyone deserves as an employee of any company or place of business? hell yeah.

Just my .002 thx

WTH is this crap about HW making someone happy? If you are looking to your employer to make you happy I certainly hope you find that happiness. I'm not one to think HW s---s specifically. For me, working s---s period and I'd rather not do it. Perhaps my expectations aren't in the right place. If I want a good view, I stay home. If I want to feel good I stay home. I don't look for my employer to do that for me. That's just nuts!

HW makes me happy 26 times a year. The same as any other employer would do. For that I do work and I do it well. And each day when I've worked for 8 hours 5 days out of the week I leave and go someplace where I feel good and happy

I guess that masochism is still a thing in 2018. Some folks are happy to stay. I'm not one of them.

I got out. Went to a company that really cares about the employees. It has been night and day. Feels good to be wanted. Feels great to be valued. It is a relief to not have to work 50 plus hour weeks and charge every stupid task to a charge number.

I don't think you can ever get happy at honeywell. Getting out is the best option.

@3eyo - If you want to be seen at one of those "exotic" shops purchasing an actual butt plug, go for it. The cork is a lot cheaper and you can get one at home. Better rinse it first.

For all those corn hole-ers: “Mikey likes it....he’ll eat anything!”

How’s that inventory number going little Mikey?

P.S. My apologies to Life cereal.

3xzi - they haven't actually produced any decent software in Atlanta either. Seems more to be a place for Indians to put down as an address for their US visas more than an actual software development center.

3kjm - i thought the best defense was a Butt Plug

The cheapest & best defense against a corn-holeing is a wine cork.

Morale is great in the new building in Atlanta. overpaid software multipliers haven’t yet had the experience of being blamed for decisions they didn’t make. Soon.

At Deervalley (Aero) they really are trying to improve the moral by having employee appreciation events.where they give out ice cream, popcorn, and by having some light competive events like ping-pong and corn holeling tournenments. They really seem to big on corn holeling!

I have been in Honeywell over 15 years and I have never seen moral this low in every area of the business. I don't see Aero people much but I see HBT, SPS, PMT and Corporate and everyone seems to be disgruntled. They are in Sales, Engineering, Marketing, HR, Legal, IT, Accounting, Finance and all seem to agree its never been worse not even during the Great Recession and furloughs

And nobody seems to see a path to improvement

Is anyone seeing improvements anywhere?? Benefits are worse, 401k worse, job satisfaction worse...? Any signs of turning this place around??

The way your workforce is (mis)treated is defined at the CEO level and flows down. The guy has been a year or so on the job and there has been no message or sign of a desire to change this. You can be sure it won't change. Life is short, get the heck out of there like I did.

It always amazes me that people stay with a company they hate. Honeywell has its issues but I love my job. If you hate it so much, leave. People can tell when you aren’t happy and why would you waste your time?
