Thread regarding Pearson PLC layoffs

Why no hiring freeze?

My question is why was US HEd not on a hiring freeze the last 12 months? People that were hired last fall, moved their families to their territories out of state, were laid off yesterday.

JF announced there would be another round of 3000+ layoffs last year. So upper management KNEW there would be impact. If they had gone on a hiring freeze a lot of people would have been saved yesterday. I knew upper management didn't care about it's people, but this is on a whole other level. We should all be furious for ourselves and the people let go in this madness that apparently required zero strategic thought.

@TwQX5po-1fks makes an excellent point. Belongs on the front page.

It will continue to happen as long as the current leadership is in place. As long as the shareholders are making their money the current leadership will be in place also so count on more of this happening .

What do you mean it would convey company troubles? Ummm the troubles were very apparent when they announced the 2017 earnings report and that they were getting rid of 8000 positions through sell offs and layoffs. They most certainly should have implemented a hiring freeze the second this news was announced.

It’s just another example of the US HEd management being totally clueless and thinking the layoffs were not going to affect their division, even though this division is the main reason why Pearson is tanking faster than the Titanic. The management seriously doesn’t know it’s head from a hole in the ground. Most inept group ever which is reflected in their sales numbers.

They also LOVE making everyone work their tails off all spring to win as much business as possible, just to let people go the second decisions are finalized. Like clockwork every year and it’s so wrong.

Why no hiring freeze?

I hiring freeze would portray a company trouble.

Also probably positions with already decided internal hires, but legally they have to post openings.

It's Pearson. Their plan is no plan.

It's pretty comical actually. So many managers TRULY thought that there would be no lay offs. They are in complete denial of the dumspter fire that is the US HigherEd division and thought the negative sales goals would go on forever. For whatever reason, they have believed its the other divisions bleeding out.

The beauty of turning the sales rep position into an entry-level job is that Pearson can (and will) treat you like disposable trash. At this point, if you are still working for Pearson, they know you either don’t have other options or would never leave them. Either way, this gives them a license to treat you and your colleagues the way they have.

I believe given you folks are rookie reps your opinions are least valuable to management and their only job is to brainwash you in the first year that Pearson is the best, #1, and values their employees. They don't care about losing that money on training--they'll just bring someone else in after you, pay them less, and give them less resources. I told many of you rookies to not drink the kool aid. So you're back at square one and hopefully in a new industry.

I was also hired in January and let go. I was told my job would not be in the layoffs either. I think about how much money the spent on training me and others they hired in the last 6 months. They wasted all that money. No wonder they are losing so much money. Who is making these decisions.
