Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Engineering Inefficiency

I recently joined QCT as an experienced engineer. I am amazed at the inefficiency of the SOC engineering. We got done what QCT does with half the people. Seems like the mentality at Q is pile on a ton of people to accomplish each step of the development process and then move on to the next crisis. I don't see senior management doing anything to improve process. Poor leadership IMO, this needs to be fixed in an environment where we are laying off people.

QC as a whole does have a ton of fat it can trim. Even in the Server area where it was supposedly running thin. I see and have seen lazy non working people for years.

Unfortunately the workers are bailing and the ones left are riders, unlucky, or retiring. This place is a sinking ship.

Nice summary OP. I’ve been with Q 3 years coming from The other place. I knew day 2 (orientation was ok day 1) that I had made a HUGE career mistake coming to Q. I am rectifying this and hope to go back to A asap.

Process improvement is not part of Q culture.

Fundamental problem with Q is that R&D has been propped up by licensing for years, and so, due to mismanagement, the chaos and inefficiencies you mention have become endemic. It can’t stand on its own. Before 5G gets the chance to take off, licensing looks to decline further, which will expose more of the weaknesses of R&D. Investors have lost patience with Q. I see more layoffs on the horizon. The ship is foundering. If you see a better boat, swim to it before your colleagues get there and take up the best seats.

Agreed. I see lots and lots of middle level chefs falling over one another shouting that they have the best recipe. Meanwhile, the kitchen is a shocking mess with junior chefs scurrying around in the mayhem all doing their own little disconnected, faintly bewildered part of the unwritten, unclear recipe.

Its all clearly not going well, so lets throw more chefs at the kitchen! Meanwhile the unwashed dishes and bowls continue to litter the floor so the next recipe get all tripped up in the mess.

OP : go google and read up on the lawsuit over the 810 power/heat mayhem. Utter engineering incompetence and customers hung out to dry.
