Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

Las Vegas Centurylink Engineers

The engineers that were let go this past Thursday were given no notice and advised they had 20 minutes to pack up their things and were then walked out the door. They were shocked.

No advance warning. Last minute notice. Nice ending to years of faithful service.

Take notice. This is how the new management is handling things. It can happen anytime, any department. The company is doing massive layoffs and is worried that those same ex-employees will retaliate. That is the reason no notice is given.

So you can forget about your retirement party. The company Just saved the money they would have used for your party and your gift.

Welcome to our new combined level 3 / centurylink company. May all of us who are left, survive long enough to prosper into retirement. If we don’t survive the next cuts (more is coming), I wish everyone the best.

Yes, stress. No repeats, quality jobs. Hear that crap every day. But, you can't have no repeats and do quality work when they won't let you fix anything or spend any money to put cable sections in or fix splices etc. So you got customers in a 600pr thats bad and they won't fix. So you go back time after time as the pairs keep going bad and then it's on you for the repeats.

Go throw another garbage bag on the terminal because we can't afford a new case, it will be allright. Then have to explain to customers why their line s---s, DSL won't run the speed and they constantly have trouble. Oh, don't forget about the bandwidth exhaust we can't spend money on to fix. Don't forget the hundreds of people OOS because there is only one CO guy now instead of four and he can't keep up. Yeah.

Then, the SRO walks around like he is in a daze just seemingly immune to all of it. Just laughs when you try to have a reasonable conversation with him and says "this is what they want" and shrugs it off. The famous they. Then he tells us....one of these days we will all be contractors. Well, not this old boy. It is time to get while the getting is good.

We in Florida got the VSPP on 5/4. Had to accept by 5/18. The material says, if approved we will be working no latter than 7/31. We have not had an update, only rumors as to who and when the company will approve.

The problem is, two years ago if we had plant trouble it would get fixed. Today if fiber or copper get cut we aren't fixing it unless we have materials in stock.

And now we are being watched and followed.

Such a difficult time.

My response is to continue to work and save money. If they want us gone, they will get rid of us, but for the moment we keep getting paid, so just work and let the stress go to the birds.

In Las Vegas engineering division, at least one of the 3 supervisors is next. They are down 9 engineers. Why 3 supervisor. Pretty smart of the company to have the supervisor do the dirty work of Laying off their engineers. Then their next level supervisor will then lay off one of them. It’s coming. Which one. Don’t know.

Bargaining unit employees in NC that put in for packages by 5/18/18 were told all that put in for it got it. Last day for them 5/31/18. This company doesn’t care about its customers much less it’s employees. It’s on a downward spiral...just a matter of time b4 the crash & burn happens to the local service side. SRO positions should be next to go with low number of workers under them & having to pay big bonus for meeting the numbers that they push CST’s to fudge. So much for unifying principles. What a crappy company to work for!!!

No notice is right. They offered packages in Florida. Last day to accept was 5-18. Still no notice as to if it's accepted or not. Why? Because they are waiting until last minute and so you can't take your floaters. Just a shame the way this company operates. Union tries but looks like 2020 going to be a fun renegotiating contract. Go ahead and strike the company will not budge then. Sad people want to leave then the company chooses not to tell us. Union says two weeks they have. Horrible language in contract and nothing union can do about it. Hold on because this bus is going to go in flames here soon. Good experienced employees want out.
