Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

Fuzzy Layoff Math

When CenturyLink's acquisition of Level 3 was announced, the reported size of the combined company was 52,500 employees.

In CenturyLink's 2017 10K filing with the SEC, it reads, "At the end of December 31, 2017, we had approximately 51,000 employees...".

In the most recent layoff news for CenturyLink, it shows the company with roughly 50,000 employees before cutting another 2% of the employees.

So... 52,500... then 51,000... then 50,000... now 49,000...

So if the reported numbers are accurate, from the time of announced acquisition of Level 3 to today - the combined company dropped about 3,500 employees (or -6.7%). This doesn't take into account any new hires too.

Perhaps that is part of the strategy - to do layoffs in small enough slices, so that it doesn't get attention.

Someone in another post mentioned 30,000 as a number. Unsure if they meant that as a combined company objective or just Centurylink.

The layoffs are harming the business, permanently. They have no idea what they are doing, and of course it's more than 1000. That's obvious.

That “shock the company” ship has come and gone. These layoffs are being made in most areas that are already short staffed for the work demand, so clearly l3 management has not thought this work force reduction through. Though all these layoffs benefit shareholders, the layoffs harm the company in so many more ways. Just try and order a dsl line or gpon line for yourself from ctl. You will never know the anxiety and struggle it takes for overworked employees to get that line put in properly for you!!

They just need to think it through, a step at a time, and not shock the company. Good move for shareholders in the way they manage this.
